Just to clear up a common misconception, not all mimes are silent actors who paint their faces. Miming is simply physical acting, not silent acting. Most mimes actually talk or make some sort of noises. Marcel Marceau was the first to really popularize the silent bit. Soon a lot of mimes started doing the silent bit and now the public thinks all mimes are silent when that is not the case.

As for the painted face thing ... the original mimes were the Italian Commedia dell'Arte performers. They all wore masks and improvised spoken lines but their acting was very physical and each character was differentiated by their physicalities and masks. Many mimes still wear masks but again, Marcel Marceau popularized the whole face painting thing and soon that dominated the mime world. Yet many mimes don't wear masks or make up at all.

If you're a fan of Eddie Izzard, he mixes a lot of mime with his stand up comedy. No face paint (well, he does wear make up but that's different with him being a transvestite and all, lol), no silent acting, but all physical acting which is what mime is.
