I've never stayed there, I have only attend parties held there. What I saw was nice. However, if you want some nicer hotels...I'd reccommend something in Birmingham like the Townsend. That's about 20 minutes from CC and super close to Royal Oak.

This is so hard. I must really want to come there. I don't make this much effort to clean my apartment.

I am soooo not going to stay at the Ramada. I'm sorry if I sound like a snob, but I like staying in clean places where I won't have to worry about catching some kind of vaginal crud if I happen to pee ON the toilet in the room.

then why are you coming to Detroit?

Actually I'd stay near Royal Oak or Birmingham if I were you. Maybe downtown Detroit will be ok. The reason I say this is because the public transportation sucks in metro-Detroit so if you get a hotel in Dearborn or Southfield or some parts of Detroit - you will be stuck in your room all day with nothing to do. If you're near royal oak you'll have at least adequate transit (bus) and there are shops and restautants to walk around to. But even Royal Oak or Birmingham are small areas, only a few blocks of stores.

Metro Detroit is NOT a tourist area for a reason. I lived in Miami. That is a real city with things to do. Miami has shopping districts, parks, beaches, etc. Detroit COULD have those things but doesn't. The beaches in Detroit are non usable (the river is dirty), there aren't any real parks, most of Detroit is a ghetto with gunplay.

I don't mean to sound so down on this city, I'm just telling you the truth. If you plan on coming to hang out with DGNers and go to the clubs you'll have a good time, there's just not really a touristy area here.

edit: the suburbs are nice places to live and grow up in though!

I'm not worried about touristy. I just want to hang out with y'all.

--- i'd say yeah to that too

shot for around royal oak that way you will be close enough to detroit/city club still. and have other stuff to walk around to during the day in royal oak.

I'll be unemployed and have a ton of time at that point if you find yourself bored... *L*

Lots of Hotels in Southfield, it is like Corporate Central, might be a location place to check.

When are you coming?

Posted

I want to come on my b-day, September 23. We'll leave on the 25th.

DONT stay at the days inn downtown.

i dont know about taxi services and all. this is a city where there just isnt good public trans. everyone drives. look into renting a car. its not all that expensive. we usually do that if we go out of town (cause detroiters have no clue how to use public trans ;) )

the ponch is pretty nice and fairly central.

There is good reason not to use Detroit public transportation as it really isn't the best. Car rentals are cheap or you could network a bunch of us Dgn'ers into helping you get around and really save money. But I'm sure you'd want more freedom in getting around.

Here's my plan:

I arrive Friday, go to my hotel room, take a nap.

Get up, hopefully go out with some of you, stay up all night, go to hotel, and sleep.

Wake up eventually, eat, go to CC with some more of you, stay up late again.

Get up, go to the airport, get on the plane.

Simple enough. I don't plan on going shopping, unless there are any good goth shops. I want to eat, sleep, and party.

Well then I would say a car rental is not going to be needed. I could be wrong though.

Posted

Who knows? I just want to get a nice place and hang with cool people.

Posted

There's a few goth type shops in the Royal Oak area.... I wouldn't call them "good" though... go to Toronto or Chicago for that.

Posted

i dont really shop, so what the hell do i know?

but i do know that i feel stuck without a car. i think its about $100-$200 for a weekend or so, depending. we drove down to florida in a rented minivan a few years ago over spring break. cant recall exactly, and the old lady thinks it was cheaper than i do, but it wasnt more than about $200 for the week...not counting gas etc.

i just liek having a car. can you tell i live in the motor city? :wink

This could get just frustrating enough to where I might not come up.

Posted

nah don't get frustrated.... you are going to hear all different things from everyone cuz we all live in different areas.

seriously- best bet: stay close to royal oak- you will have a lot of daytime walking around stuff to do. and close enough to the "nightlife" stuff you want to do that is in royal oak/detroit. i can't give you specific places as i don't know any hotels in that area??

The Hamilton in Birmingham looks like a nice choice. The price for flight and the room for the weekend are decent as well. That looks like the way to go.

-Something else, might be the Ramada at 400 Bagley, Detroit. It has a good club (City Club) and a good bar (Labyrinth), and you're just about 2 short blocks from the downtown loop monorail ("people-mover"). Also, from the Ramada you can walk to Hart plaza for festivals and there's some good places to eat not to far away-you can also catch a bus from across the street at Time Square and go anywhere, Windsor, Canada, Royal Oak, etc. -If not there, there's a Holiday Inn Express on Michigan avenue at Washington, which is just about 2 blocks from the Ramada...

Ph, the Ramada is out of the question. I can't stay there. I'm really wierd about the cleanliness of a hotel, and this one got the worst ratings I've ever seen on Expedia. I think I'm shooting for the Hamilton in Birmingham. That way, I'm fairly central to everything.

Thank you for helping, though!

Yeah, well if cleanliness is a thing, maybe you should stay out of Detroit all together...i'd give you guys my spare room free, but I don't think it'd be a very restfull vacation for the two of you at my place...
