Gothic Musicians: goths are renowned for their intelligence

how about reworking some instruments into other musical systems?

I have done this before, looking for collaborators

Have refretted a guitar into nineteen tone equal temperament

and reworked an electric guitar into fretless.

aren't you sick of the same old notes?

What about trying different tonal systems? For example. Balinese Gamelan music could be turned into something interesting or music for koto or shamison. You could also use tone clusters for dramatic effect like in horror movies.

hmm, A piano, of which inexpensive ones litter the thrifstoreside, seem easy to tune with a square allen wrench

I am quite skilled -so I think- at tuning and refretting guitars -we shall see with basses-

tonal clusters,

familiar with the work of william sethares

his theory is -it's not so much the tone system as the over tones and harmonics, the 'timbre'?- that determines

the listenability of the music

For me, it's the aesthetic the music creates. Timbre helps, as do various scales, tunings, etc. Hell, even chance music has an interesting part to play. I would also suggest studying John Cage's philosophies behind performance art and music. He's pretty out there.

I feel..... SO... barbaric... right now..... I just pick out noises that are 'right' & put them in an order 'that suits them'.....

..........till it sounds like my madness.......... I did not understand more than 3-5 words you fellas just used.....

...thought I would throw in the fact that I was watching.

I have had a lot of musical theory throughout my life.... which is good because now I know what I am ignoring when I do, and diving into when I don't.

I have written classical piano pieces (and those are the hardest to write IMO)

Usually I do more or less what rev says.... I start with a sound, usually some raw materials from my sample library... the sound of a scream, a laser gun, a vehical, a monster, machinary in the background.... dump effects and eq on in and throw it into my K-2000.... and whatever environment that creates.... I flow with it.

BUT... I also pay close attention to timbre, meter, and structure. If something needs to have a sticato voice... thats what I look for. If something needs adjustments to LFO or higher frequencies.... then I am very patient and try to make it work.

I am also a classically trained musician but I see it really as sound alchemy. You take something you like and throw it into the pot. Then you add something else, then maybe a cool drumline, some more ear candy. Isnt it cool that we have so many tools at our disposal for creating music. In the end, if it's good it's good. Rev, I really enjoyed hearing your stuff. Songwriting just comes naturally to me. It was fun doing stuff in college with my rock bands, with d:konstruct which i might start doing again, folk music, or even just singing art songs, opera, or whatever. Im excited about this goth project. I hope people are seriously interested in collaborating. Good luck to all with your song writing experiences!

If I ever have the time to do music again, and fix up my studio.... I will be a happy man.

i thought about this. its not that popular. the problem is pricing a custom set like that for a guitar. i whould learn and play it like a madman if i got my hands on one. now for industrial, electronic, im sure you could work out some cool songs.
