Guest greyhalo Posted September 15, 2008 Posted September 15, 2008 Remember to celebrate Banned Books Week--September 27-October 4, 2008. The following books were the most frequently challenged in 2007: The ALA Office for Intellectual Freedom received a total of 420 challenges last year. A challenge is defined as a formal, written complaint, filed with a library or school requesting that materials be removed because of content or appropriateness. According to Judith F. Krug, director of the Office for Intellectual Freedom, the number of challenges reflects only incidents reported, and for each reported, four or five remain unreported. The “10 Most Challenged Books of 2007” reflect a range of themes, and consist of the following titles: 1) “And Tango Makes Three,” by Justin Richardson/Peter Parnell Reasons: Anti-Ethnic, Sexism, Homosexuality, Anti-Family, Religious Viewpoint, Unsuited to Age Group 2) The Chocolate War,” by Robert Cormier Reasons: Sexually Explicit, Offensive Language, Violence 3) “Olive’s Ocean,” by Kevin Henkes Reasons: Sexually Explicit and Offensive Language 4) “The Golden Compass,” by Philip Pullman Reasons: Religious Viewpoint 5) “The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn,” by Mark Twain Reasons: Racism 6) “The Color Purple,” by Alice Walker Reasons: Homosexuality, Sexually Explicit, Offensive Language, 7) "TTYL,” by Lauren Myracle Reasons: Sexually Explicit, Offensive Language, Unsuited to Age Group 8) "I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings,” by Maya Angelou Reasons: Sexually Explicit 9) “It’s Perfectly Normal,” by Robie Harris Reasons: Sex Education, Sexually Explicit 10) "The Perks of Being A Wallflower,” by Stephen Chbosky Reasons: Homosexuality, Sexually Explicit, Offensive Language, Unsuited to Age Group
Msterbeau Posted September 15, 2008 Posted September 15, 2008 As always... No one objects to violence... but SEX??? OMG!!!
SaGa Posted September 15, 2008 Posted September 15, 2008 reminds me of the banned words in high school textbooks. newspeak is happening, they just call it being politically correct. The Golden Compass - pretty much any group seeking this book being banned, they validate one of pullmans main points.
sass_in_the_pants Posted September 15, 2008 Posted September 15, 2008 5) “The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn,” by Mark Twain Reasons: Racism Seriously? Is anyone REALLY still trying to ban this one? And racism? Uh, well, duh. That's half the point of the book. And Golden Compass book...whatever. Ban the movie. It was crap.

MinaRose Posted September 15, 2008 Posted September 15, 2008 I read "The Chocolate War" in high axhool for advanced English. From what I remember, I liked it. I also read "Olive's Ocean" in high school for a class and loved it. I would like to read "The Color Purple" and "The Perks of Being A Wallflower".
Homicidalheathen Posted September 15, 2008 Posted September 15, 2008 And Tango Makes Three,” by Justin Richardson/Peter Parnell Reasons: Anti-Ethnic, Sexism, Homosexuality, Anti-Family, Religious Viewpoint, Unsuited to Age Group A must read.... I had heard about the wanting to take the classic Huckleberry Fin off of the school reading list...but I think it is a good one to keep on, to point out social ignorance in modern society

MinaRose Posted September 15, 2008 Posted September 15, 2008 We forgot The Anarchists Cookbook, and 1984.considering the material they talk about.carry on. Hopefully I will be reading 1984 tonight! I am having my dad run to the library for me, as I have been in bed all day today and all night last night sick. I believe I have a cold. UGH! So I wanted to get some books to read. I heard 1984 was a must read and it sounded interesting, so hopefully I will get it!
Guest greyhalo Posted September 15, 2008 Posted September 15, 2008 We forgot The Anarchists Cookbook, and 1984.considering the material they talk about.carry on. This list merely contains the top 10 books challenged in the past year. "The Anarchist Cookbook" is not an item most school and public libraries carry, so it's not often challenged.
