Metrotimes Article

I was disgusted when I seen this article. This, coupled with the Republican trend of using music without bothering to ask for the rights, will not have me voting Republican anytime soon....

It's a BIG article, so I'll post some of the more dangerous parts.

""With Michigan set to be one of the most important battleground states in this election and turnout predicted to be the highest in history, we are going to do everything we can to make sure that every vote counts and that nobody is illegally purged from the voter roles," Kary Moss, executive director of the ACLU of Michigan, said in a press release last week.

The ACLU's lawsuit concerns policies that could result in large numbers of students, minorities and low-income voters being shut out.

The civil liberties group is challenging one Michigan Department of State program that immediately cancels the registration of prospective voters who obtain driver's licenses in other states without following removal procedures mandated by 1993's national Voter Registration Act.

Also being challenged is a Michigan law requiring local clerks to "nullify newly registered voters whenever their original voter identification cards are returned by the post office as undeliverable." In Detroit alone, according to the ACLU, election officials report that nearly 30,000 voters per year are removed from the rolls as a result of this allegedly illegal law.

"Students and young adults generally are much more transient than older adults, are much more likely to have driver's licenses from different states than their colleges, and are much more likely to live in multi-unit housing, such as dormitories and apartments. Anyone who has lived in these types of housing knows that mail can sometimes be very unreliable and unpredictable," said Jonathan Doster, a Michigan field organizer for the student association.

Minorities and poor people disproportionately tend to live in multi-family housing as well, critics of the laws being challenged contend."

that part alone amazes me...that ANYONE would pull such a trick...

Interesting article. Seems heavily one sided but interesting none the less. Thanks for taking the time to point it out.

you should have seen my jaw drop when I read it...and yes..it seems one sided...but the GOP has a history of this as of late...and while the metrotimes isn't going to be considered the most politically biased paper ever done, I do think that they tend to stick heavily on facts and research when it comes to the "news Hits" section.

What scares me is that they are right...it has the ability to cut out college kids all over the country, as well as severely counter the ability of a multi-family household to vote.

is that the message we need to send out to everyone?..students and poor people have less of a right to vote???

Pesky things those laws and regulations. They get in the way of upstanding orginizations like ACORN stuffing ballet boxes with votes from dead people.

except that these laws, means that if your kid is in college, he very well may not get a chance to vote, because he lives in a dorm.

Or that, because of the economy, and the amount of foreclosures, that all those registered voters, since not having a "home" anymore, don't get to vote.

none of these people are dead...this isn't about stuffing boxes, this is about taking away the right to vote from people simply because of the current housing situations, not even their housing situation at the time of registration.

Hehe...

I always said when I die I want to move to Illinois, so my vote will still count.

They can still vote if they would just do as they are sopposed to to be within the rules.

It's called a Change of Address card for those people of forclosure. For those kids away at college, in a dorm... a change of address or an Absentee Ballot both work.

Nothing is taking away thier right to vote except thier lack of motivation to do what needs to be dont to insure it's done legally.

Personal Responsibility.

Exactly, I'm registered to vote in Presque Isle county, but I'm living in Livingston county. I've got an absentee ballot coming to my place so I can still vote. They aren't that difficult to get, just have to sign your name in a few places.

As Gaf said, it all comes down to personal responsibility, which these days it seems like people forget about.

Posted

What the two above said. The reason these regulations the Metro Times hates so much exist is so people can't be registered to vote in two different places. That would mean they could vote twice. You wouldn't want somebody voting for McCain twice now would you? See, regulations are a good thing.

Posted

It's not about voting twice....and I figured Gaf would try to spin it ok, as he has his nose up the ass of McCain/Palin.

IF you have a house on the day you register, and loose that house before Election day....if your Change of address gets "lost", or you simply don't have a home at the time....your aren't allowed to vote.

Also....Absentee Ballots have to be sent to the state where the student drivers liscense origionates from...it can be lost....or even never counted....which HAS happened....You should have a right to vote, ONCE, no matter your living status.

It's not personal responsibilty if the GOP takes that option to have that responsibility away from you.

The GOP did not make the voter registration laws. Some states have always required voter registration. After the Civil war, every state enacted voter registration laws, pushed by the Democratic party. Most of them right before the Suffrage vote in an attempt to keep black people from gaining the right to vote. The Republican party fought for years to remove many of the barriers to voting enacted in those laws. In the 1970's major strides were made to open up the process to everyone and remove the racial blocks.. put in place by the Democrats.

Stop trying to rewrite history.

It was the Republican party that freed the slaves.

It was the Republican party that fought to give Blacks and Women the right to vote.

It was the Republican party that fought to remove segregation.

It is the Democratic party that is most often caught committing voter fraud.

"Lincoln publicly referred to blacks by the most offensive racial slur. In one speech, Lincoln said he opposed the expansion of slavery into the territories because he didn't want the West "to become an asylum for slavery and n-----s."

"Lincoln envisioned and advocated an all-white West, declaring at Alton, Ill., in 1858, that he was "in favor of our new territories being in such a condition that white men may find a home ... as an outlet for free white people everywhere, the world over."

"Lincoln blamed blacks for the Civil War, telling them, "But for your race among us there could not be a war, although many men engaged on either side do not care for you one way or another."

"Lincoln claimed that "the people of Mexico are most decidedly a race of mongrels. I understand that there is not more than one person there out of eight who is pure white."

Ladies and Gentlmen....Abraham Lincoln...First pure Republican president...yep...the Republicans are all about removing seregation and giving ppl the right to vote...Odd thing is....most black voters...are DEMOCRATS!!!

We had a student at my school last year whose family lived EIGHT different places over the year... not counting shelters. Their situation is unfortunately far from unique. I don't think a change of address card would have done much good. As far as "lack of motivation", well, families in this category are pretty much using up all their motivation just to keep body and soul together... so I doubt they have much left over to deal with what many would consider bureaucratic hoop-jumping.

Well considering it was the 1860s the N-word wasn't considered a "bad word" it was just how people talked back then. I don't really think you can use that in this argument since societies definition of right and wrong has changed dramatically since then.

Yeah, back then "hogwash" was a bad word.

A few years ago when some friends and I had a band, we were trying to think of a name for it. My roommate said, "What's another word for hidden or concealed?" Our guitarist, Nick, said, "Let me grab my thesaurus and check." So, he looked up the word 'concealment' and started reading off a few entries, one of which was, "nigger in a wood pile". We all gasped in shock and Nick said, "When the hell was this thing written?!" He flipped to the inside cover and it was copyrighted in 1927 or thereabouts. Etymology is an interesting thing to study. When and why have "normal" words become "bad" and "bad" words become "normal"?

I'm thinking I'm going to be moving to AZ, soon! Can't wait! I friggin' love it here! The heat doesn't bother me at all and the best part? NO SNOW!!! (S.N.O.W. - Shit  No One Wants)   Been staying in Bullhead City where the kids and grandkids live. Next, we're going to the wife's cousin's which is a ways North of Kingman, in the middle of nowhere, where we actually plan to move.   I really like Bullhead. It's a nice little town. Not overcrowded like Colorado Springs has become, at all. Very light traffic, reasonable prices on everything, low taxes, etc. The river offers a lot to do, with a lot of beaches and campgrounds all around it.   But yeah even though we've been over 110º-115º F just about every day,  I can handle it!  What I can't handle anymore, is snow and being cold. Just tired of it. Give me the desert over a blizzard any day!
