Fierce Critter Posted November 19, 2004 Posted November 19, 2004 So, I'm putting in a late night catching up on board stuff, while watching Conan O'Brien. Flaming Lips come on to perform their song from the new SpongeBob movie... The band are all dressed in pink fisherman's boots and shaggy pink fake-fur coats, and the lead singer is inside a gigantic hamster-ball performing with a cordless mike & guitar. Though I can't stand their music (my husband is a fan), I very much appreciate the eccentricity of the visuals.
phee Posted November 19, 2004 Posted November 19, 2004 I am kinda the same way... I don't think I am quite cool enough to like them.
Fierce Critter Posted November 19, 2004 Author Posted November 19, 2004 Well, I'd like to say that it's not a matter of "coolness". I know I can't stand their music 'cause it involves a lot of droning on, dischord, chaotic phrasing - it's not melody-based, which is what my ear craves. Even the "goth" music I like tends toward heavy melody. I can't get into the heavier, industrial side of the genre 'cause melody disappears more and more as you get deeper and deeper into it. Often seemingly replaced by cacaphony - which just hurts my head. I'm a bit anal, and sorta crave "order", even in the music I listen to.
SomeDanGuy Posted November 24, 2004 Posted November 24, 2004 Wow, I wish I had seen that. I also wish I had a giant hampster ball!
