I was listening to Eurhythmics' "Love is a stranger" earlier tonight, and I finally remembered what this synth was called.

In addition to being Dave Stewart's workhorse synth on the first 4 or 5 Eurhythmics albums, it was Gillian Gilbert's main synth on New Order's Power, Corruption and Lies and Low-Life albums, so give it up for the little Octave Voyetra 8! :D

Gillian Gilbert rocking two Voyetra 8s; they're the top two units on her rack stack.

awesome dual-manual Oberheim 8-voice built for former Yes keyboardist Patrick Moraz.

Geddy Lee used a single-manual version of this on Hemispheres, Permanent Waves and Moving Pictures.

each module can have a completely different sound :D

amazing video here - most of the instruments are pre-synth, but there's some cool old-skool synthage to be had. Cool to see 360 Systems and RMI represented. :D

In case you're curious, the RMI featured a sort of card reader; you either filled in little squares or punched holes (don't remember which) to "draw" the waveform you wanted, and the RMI would read the waveform and create it.

Its 2 most famous users were Rick Wakeman (on his 2nd go-round with Yes) and Roger Powell, who used one both with David Bowie and with Utopia.

Richard Tandy of ELO has always been one of my favorite keyboardists. He was the first keyboardist who made me want to do keyboard-heavy music. I at one time knew what he used, but that knowledge long left my brain.

Skip to 1:57 if you want to get right to the man at work:

Oh, and this - Jean Jacques Perrey rocks my all-time favorite, The Moog:
