StormKnight (1) Posted January 6, 2009 Posted January 6, 2009 For the literary dose of WTF, the original plots of 4 favorite stories, and a few that were just downright....eek. Creepy Fairy Tales
StormKnight (1) Posted January 6, 2009 Author Posted January 6, 2009 here are links to the books for the stories: The Lost Children (p97) Click "preview book" under the picture of it to read it. The Juniper Tree The King Who Wished to Marry His Daughter
Homicidalheathen Posted January 6, 2009 Posted January 6, 2009 fairy tales are so ubber goth indeed Most are to be a lesson to scare kids...like the 3 bears...as people used to leave their doors unlocked...red riding hood, stranger dangers...
pomba gira Posted January 7, 2009 Posted January 7, 2009 The absolute best in bizarre Victorian kiddie cautionary tales: STRUWWELPETER!!! Yeah, the original "Little Mermaid" is pretty grim, but the absolute best Hans Christian Anderson punitive tales are "The Red Shoes" and "The Girl who Trod on a Loaf". In "The Red Shoes", little Karen is cursed to dance in her red shoes ('cos she wore them to church, among other heinous crimes) "until your skin shrivels from your bones". She avoids this fate by having a friendly executioner chop off her feet. The shoes go dancing off (with her feet still in them) and prevent her from truly repenting her sins by dancing across her path whenever she tries to go to church. She finally dies during a vision where she is magically transported to church. There is a seriously groovy anthology series edited by Ellen Datlow and Karen Windling, interpretations of fairy tales by contemporary fantasy authors. Goth sensibility, erotica, grim realities of the past and present... these stories have it all!
Scales Posted January 7, 2009 Posted January 7, 2009 Here's one of my favorites. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Boy_Who_Drew_Cats
EnViOuSPoPpEt Posted January 7, 2009 Posted January 7, 2009 I like these stories.. that's actually what I grew up on not the fake Disney happy ending bull shit..
Gaf The Horse With Tears Posted January 7, 2009 Posted January 7, 2009 "Ring around the rosie" is about the black death.
freydis Posted January 7, 2009 Posted January 7, 2009 There's an anthology of Grimm's fairytales as they were originally..... beautifully illustrated, too. I believe it's called "Grimm's Grimmest". And actually, ring around the rosie is not about the plague.
Gaf The Horse With Tears Posted January 8, 2009 Posted January 8, 2009 I've seen it argued both ways. I wont click your link though, snopes is not always right and they use far too many invasive pop-ups that will install spyware given the chance.
jynxxxedangel Posted January 8, 2009 Posted January 8, 2009 Here's the fictitious character I was threatened with, as a child: "Rawhead and Bloodybones" My gran used this guy to scare the living shit out of us all. It's funny, when I bring this up to northerners, they are not familiar.

It's funny, when I bring this up to northerners, they are not familiar. Not sure why but that one reminded me of the kappa. Probably just because I love the kappa. They are adorable. One lives on my bed. ^^
