A Question For Left Handed People

Over 2500 left handed people a year are killed from using products made for right handed people

got me wondering about something that has never crossed my mind before.

I would like to find out from some of you. If you are left handed how much trouble (if any) do you have using items that are or may have been designed for right handed people?

I noticed an ex gf that was left handed had trouble with a computer mouse and would switch hands in an effort to use it but other than that I think she had no other troubles.

I myself am mostly right handed - though sometimes I find things to be done more easy left handed.

So are you left handed and if so do you have problems with any devices or items ect ect?

Machinery poses the biggest problem. Took me forever to get used to a stick shift. (But now, I can imagine working it the other way.) Most annoying of small tools? Potato peelers.

Hand crank can openers are hell.

Hammers, try using a hammer with the wrong hand. I have, over the years, learned to hammer with my right hand, but I am no where near as accurate as with my left hand.

Being in the design field, I encounter stuff related to this from time to time. Sadly, the costs for accommodating left handed people is often prohibitive.

I am ambidextrous, and so is my brother. My mother thought FORCING ME to write with my right hand and trying to 'cure' me of left handedness would make my life easier even though I preferred using my left as a youngster.

Yes I have a hard time at times as for menial tasks I prefer my left.

My mouse is on the left...

Can't say I ever injured myself over it though if anything its a blessing.

I can write with both hands (that, for some reason made some guy think I would be perfect for a life of crime...I said no thanks...)

My brother was offered a spot in the majors cause he is an excellent pitcher WITH BOTH HANDS but his knees gave out before he got out of the minors...

Once I had burned my right hand real bad and had to use my left for everything and it was easy...

I hate my kitchen cabinets though, they don't have knobs and all cabinets open to the right...thats a big pain in the ass when your hands are full and stuff. I have to swing the door open in front of my face...from my left...if that makes sense...

There are only a few times it comes up and pisses me off...most of the time its other people who are like why is your mouse over here damnit or something...

The above kind is frequently only sharpened in one direction requiring the left-hander to either peel with the right hand or to direct the peeler TOWARD one's body, frequently resulting in some peeling of the hand in addition to the potato.

XOXO makes a good non-dulling peeler that is sharpened on both sides of the interior facing blades and has an ambidextrous comfort grip. Yay! No more skinned thumbs for me!

half my shooting team are lefties,

a lot learned to shoot right handed because of the issue rifle back when those guys did a bit

I never would have that about that in such detail but now I can see that, if you are left handed and you use it in a way that you have to bring it towards you that you can get injured.

I doubt it would kill you but that's beside the point.

Like I said, I wouldn't know if it could kill you--I'm not dead yet. The closest thing to a potentially deadly thing that I've had to adapt to is my car, gear shift being on the right and all. But as I've never known anything else, I can't imagine driving any other way, even if the kinesthesia took a little longer for me than for most. (btw, mine is a manual trans)

I once had to drive a car that had it's steering wheel on the right and it was straaaaaaaaaaange.

I was just glad the damn thing was an automatic.
