I read this, and frankly I'm really disapointed that the doctors gave in instead of waiting till she was 18. There are procedure standards for a reason, waiting till 18 because at 16 she is still growing.

..I think that 16 is perfect...realize.....she probably used the logical argument that males are not done growing yet..& that she wanted to stay small shouldered you know..those German boys CAN get quite strapping between 16 & 18...AND...the fact that she was on hormones for 4 years & did not change her mind shows a certain level of stick-to-it-iveness that is (really) a rare thing in kiddz (especially now-a-days)...

..perhaps this will set a new precident..I hope so...if you can have sex leagally (most places you can at 16, some before, very few at 18)..then one should be allowed to choose their gender as well...granted..there are rules & protocols for a reason..& there are changes made to such things for reasons as well...AND..there are exceptions to every rule...or else we become static..& there is no movement...stagnant even.....(that was SO redundant)...(think I'll leave it)..

Exactly... also, as the article said, puberty is often a major trauma for transgendered people. And these people tend to KNOW, from a very young age, that their body is not their true gender.

I wonder... if they started the homone therapy young enough, could they actually "reprogram" the development process so that less surgical alteration would be required? Probably too many ethical issues to find out any time soon... but what a fascinating thought.
