Detroit Autorama 2009

Who's going? :)

It seems the vehicles and celebrities aren't as big as they used to be, back in the 70s and 80s.

I missed this thread. I might go. I'd want to hit it early and I'm not sure I have a day that I can get there early. Hmmm...

Well, I got an inside look at who is showing up and what they are showing off...and I would much rather stay home this year. Its really shitty since the new restrictions in Cali often ruin everything for the rest of us now...many of the "old" designs from a few years ago that had great potential have been dropped in order to please the "green" retards...who the hell keeps pushing ethanol?!?! And don't even get me started on hybrids...

Bah...I am still going...school is forcing us to go so whatever, its free...I will be hanging out at the Honda booth all day...

What I want to know, is what has happened to all the custom hot rod and motorcycle exhibits??? That has always been my reason for attending.

I don't know if this has anything to do with the show in Detorit but last time anything "cool" was at the Chicago show there were protests against it because it wasn't "green"...I think that they are trying to keep the show "innovative" and "progressive"...which to the uneducated mostly means costly attempts at fuel efficient vehicles and not performance vehicles...when in reality the truth is that these performance vehicles are what we should really be aiming for.

These auto shows are nervous times for engineers because they have to please people that, for the most part, don't know jack shit about making something efficient. Remember, most of the American public buys a vehicle and drives it until it fails and then buys a new one, with no intention of keeping proper maintainance on the vehicle...these are hard people to please.

They are trying to push vehicles that require "no attention" while at the same time having very clean emissions throughout their lifespan...which leaves no room for vehicles that require attention. If people were more willing to maintain their vehicles or have someone else maintain them so that their emissions stayed at a decend level...things would be much different.

But that is just what my Dyno prof. said about that...

Candyman... Yer mixing up the Detroit Auto Show with Autorama, methinks. It's all customs and hot rod stuff.

Jynxxxy... It's slowly getting taken over by the modern stuff. Most of which is horrible. The rat rod crowd has been growing. Not sure how long that will last. Some are pretty cool... Some are gross monstrosities built by idiots who are just jumping on the bandwagon.

Oops...my bad...the usually come up with whitty names for the auto shows in my area...its never just the (insert city) auto show.

But, we do have performance shows...and those are getting hit hard too. Seems the evironmental people don't like them.

The rat rod stuff is getting out of hand. The name rat rod is often abused by many builders...the original rat rods were actually very nice and had safety features too. I am building one right now in fact...funds are out for a while...but it is nice and I hope that people accept it...patina and all...

agreed. seen a lot of work go into rat rods

rat rods are known for ratty paint jobs as astetics take a back seat to the functions of the vehicle. not because you havent time, care or knowlage how to build something.

the hot rodding scene here has had a blow dealt to it by means of the new IVA tests

modifying the chassis or suspension linkages will need the car to go through an IVA test, where the car will have to comply with modern standards. they say that if you work on a car to preserve the historical accuracy you'll be fine.

however that period looking ford popular rod using parts from the time is no longer applicable. even rocker switches will fail a car. (there goes that idea of dropping a KV6 or a high pressure direct injection turbo diesel in a prepared TR7 or MGB as i will have to make new engine mounts OH NOES)
