Homicidalheathen Posted May 18, 2009 Posted May 18, 2009 It can be devastating to not be careful and accidently introduce something like swamp grass...which is choking out cat tails...mussels, and this: the sea lamprey which was introduced in the great lakes area in the 20's Gah! I had never seen one before they look like a monster and its prehistoric I guess the one's found in streams that don't feed off of toxic large fish are good to eat but gross don't know If I could do it. King Henry loved eating them way back when... Did you know bunnies...turned allot of Australia into desert? British brought them. http://videos.howstuffworks.com/animal-pla...asion-video.htm http://www.economicexpert.com/a/Rabbits:in:Australia.html Sea lampreys are killing our fish. http://www.glerl.noaa.gov/res/Programs/ncrais/glansis.html Inclusion of the Sea Lamprey The provenance of the sea lamprey in Lake Ontario is unresolved with Smith (1995) and Mandrak and Crossman (1992) arguing that it was non-native and Bailey and Smith (1981), Daniels (2001), and Bryan et al. (2005), among others, arguing that it was native. Regardless of its status in Lake Ontario, virtually all agree that it subsequently spread to the rest of the Great Lakes after the opening of the Welland Canal. We include it in this database because of its historic and present importance as an invader in most of the Basin and its devastating basin-wide impact on Great Lakes fisheries http://www.great-lakes.net/envt/flora-faun...ve/lamprey.html Keep up on what’s happening in one of the world’s largest fresh water supply... http://www.great-lakes.net/news/ (The Great Lakes account for one-fifth of the world's surface freshwater supply)
ttogreh Posted May 18, 2009 Posted May 18, 2009 King Henry ate sea lampreys? Well... that explains a lot.

VAGINA IN HELLLLL! Kay...end Chernobyl-train-of-thought riiiiight about here. Actually, and this is me being somewhat versed in Western Classical history/legend (Greek and Roman,) but I had flashes of Romans upper class (Patricians, I believe, according to legend) feeding the disobedient slaves to eels they kept in ponds in their house. Then they would in turn eat the eels, which were considered a delicacy being slave-fed. Publius Vedius Pollio was notorious for feeding slaves to lampreys he kept. Needless to say, I think I shall avoid skinny dipping in Lake Michigan anytime soon. Or pissing off a Roman Patrician (or if I become one, being nice to the house servants, and not be like Publius Vedius Pollio, who fed slaves to lampreys.)
TitsMcGee Posted May 19, 2009 Posted May 19, 2009 I've actually held a live lampry when I worked for the DNR, they are slimey little bastards. Believe me they are not the worst of Michigan's invasive species, EAB is much worse since they kill trees.
Homicidalheathen Posted May 19, 2009 Author Posted May 19, 2009 ...ah so thats what makes those marks.. I have been seeing that since I was a kid.
