I'm saying from Lapeer to Port Austin = Mid-Michigan.

Where are all my Mid-Michigander Goths? D:

You mean the Thumb? (I've never met anyone that considered the thumb to be part of mid Michigan) Do many people live there? I just never met many people from that area.

Well, my only response to that question is that we have advertisements for "Thumb Cellular" where I'm at and I'm on the border of Vassar and Millington. About a half hour north of Davison. =/

Oh, I know right where you are. I have a friend from Vassar.

My parents got into a row with my grandparents, shortly after I was born; so they came back to MI, and stayed in Fairgrove for a short time with friends (in a travel trailer, in a field, on a pony farm-- yep my folks were serious gypsies). Then we went back down south. I still have ties to people up that way, though. :) I think I may have family in Akron or Caro, still..but not sure.

Gotta love the Michigan Bean Festival. No better excuse to load up on chili, then go on carnival rides.

There was a guy on here from Imlay City (does that count?) but his wife has him so locked down I've not seen him online in awhile.

I've long toyed with changing the name of DGN to something a little less specific like say "Michigan Gothic" or maybe even something that has no location at all nor the word "Gothic" to include a wider range. (Might also help with the people that are afraid to help promote something with the word gothic in it for fear of social ostracism) We always welcome everyone, but I think people just assume that there isn't much here for anyone that doesn't live in SE Michigan.

At the same time the specificity of DGN is also a draw.

But DGN, 'everybody' knows "DGN". "Michigan Gothic" just sounds too general. Dont we have some outta-state people who post here?

And who cares what the public thinks about Gothic. If they're going to go out of their own way (( read: waste their own time )) to ostracize someone for something, that's their problem. It shouldnt become ours.

I always thought mid-Michigan was, well, here... say, from Ingham/Eaton counties up to around Midland, Big Rapids, Clare. The Thumb is kind of... the Thumb, isn't it?

Troy, dunno about the name change idea... "Detroit Gothic" sounds more badass than "Michigan Gothic". Maybe MurderMitten Gothic? Seriously, I agree with FariL, we do have a certain amount of name recognition and that's not something to cast aside lightly.

I defiantly agree from a philosophical sense. With the "feel" of DGN, people don't like how it sounds? Screw em! "DGN" is (somewhat) well known, why lose that brand-name?

I reality there are a ton of nice people that just have their own hangups like we all do. We can miss out on some great relationships just due to an unfortunate hangup, not that the person is unintelligent or decidedly negative with any intention. I know there are a sea of people that just were turned off immediately and never gave the place much of a second thought just due to the name, not because they are bad people, just because they have unlucky hangups or just negative connotations to the name. Some of these people which have finally become DGNers only after being dragged kicking and screaming. Something that there is no chance of happening with many potential community members. They have had no interaction with the place other than the name, and with life being busy like it is, sometimes you only have 20 seconds to hook someone in.

In terms of name recognition I also agree. But huge mega-cultural fixtures have changed their names and become bigger/better despite the short term loss of some name recognition. Also I think there are ways to maintain the name recognition while useful during a transition of that sort. Keeping the same acronym of "D.G.N. while changing the words that the letters represent might help as DGN is probably called "DGN" rather than "Detroit Gothic . Net" 95% of the time. Similar to how KFC is just called KFC by most, hell some younger people don't even know what the letters ever stood for to begin with. :p

We also have to factor in that very few people like change of this sort at first glance. It is our DNA. We like recognizable patterns, and even though we also like "new" stuff, this type of change hers is resisted out of hand.

Not that any of this is imminent. Heck, I've been toying with this before the place was even called DGN officially and "Detroit Gothic . Net" was just an idea floating around in my head. (For the first year or so it was called "The Spiral Board" , when it changed to DGN, we lost like 20% of the users due to the place "not being the same". Even though the only thing that really changed was the name and the addition of some forums.

Also the biggest "problem" with running DGN is the near-impossibility of getting consistent help with promotion. A more user-friendly name would help in an ease-of-promotion way to a fairly large degree.

Onyx is in what would be considered Mid-Michigan I think.

Well, I know that I could probably promote DGN via the Hot Topic next door to where I work but that could attract scene kids just as much as VampireFreaks.com has. =/

I just moved from Chesaning, that's between Saginaw and Flint, and about 20 miles west. I spent too many years there in seclusion after coming from LA.

That was kinda my point.

      About to head up to Roseville to return this rental and pick up my truck from the auto shop.  It is supposedly sporting a newly fabricated frame rail...I don't think they are referred to as "chassis" anymore as I see the confusion in shop owner's eyes when they ask me if I'm looking for "body work?".   But I do find it interesting that I told the owner that I worked direct with OEM parts and yet he still wrote me up an invoice with overpriced OEM parts from companies I used to host at the place I used to work for.  With that said, I'm expecting a stellar job for the amount I paid.   ...else, there will be some talk negotiations.

      ~~~~~ Definitely wishing you luck.  Do enjoy yourselves.   But I have to admit, the first thing that came to mind was does roadside assistance reach the desert? 😬
      ~~~~~ Yeah, it's like something happened to my metabolism this past Winter and when I came out of hibernation, that AARP Join Request started looking like something to check into.

      This 👆 definitely goes with what I said in my other post - getting old sucks. Seems like *everything* takes longer and takes more energy out of me than it used to. Really need to work on my diet and exercise, I've found the older I get, the more important those things have really become...
