For score (instrumental backing track), Danny Elfman's "Edward Scissorhands".

A close 2nd would probably be Randy Newman's "Ragtime".

John William's "Star Wars" is way up there, too.

For theme music, there are too many to choose from. I'm a big fan of Western themes, "The Good, The Bad & The Ugly", "Streets of Laredo", "How the West Was Won", etc. I also am crazy about some adventure themes like "Swashbuckler", "The Sea Hawk", "The 7th Voyage of Sinbad". Hard to pick a favorite from all of them.

For soundtracks made up of songs by different artists or one particular band or artist, also a toss-up between many. Would include "The Crow", "The Graduate" - Simon & Garfunkel, "Batman" - Prince, "Godspell" - admittedly, I prefer the Broadway cast to the movie version, "The Point" - Harry Nilsson.

"The Good, The Bad and The Ugly"

"The Empire Strinkes Back"

"Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers"

"The Cell"

"Eraserhead"

"Godzilla"

The problem here is that I listen to too many movie scores.. hard to narrow it down.

Halloween

Halloween 2 The Halloween score is just plain evil sounding with the organ.

All three LotR movie scores

SW Empire Strikes Back

The Fog

The Shining I wish I could find the soundtrack for this, otherwise I have to watch the movie. The best horror soundtrack.

Sounds like you are a big John Carpenter fan as well...

SWEET!!!

I think in the case of the Shining it was not an original score... I believe that Mr. Kubrick chose a contemporary composers music for the score... The opening theme was composed by Hector Berlioz (I think)

Yeah Carpenter is great. Not only can he create good movies but he does good scores.

I've been trying to find out what composers and the music that is on the Shining. I have Berlioz's Symphonie Fantastique, which has the Dream of the Witches Sabbat (Beginning music of the movie).

Penderecki is another I have. That's some wicked sounding music there.

The Good, the Bad & the Ugly... really any of Morricone's spaghetti western scores but that one is just damn near perfect.

& if anime OVAs count, definitely FLCL

I'm not sure, but I overheard someone watching 'Heathers' yesterday evening; I'd forgotton how cool the soundtrack is for that movie.
