I started my special ed class tonight, yaaay! The first assignment is to write a review of a film or TV episode that features a character with a disability of some kind. Any suggestions? Don't want anything really obvious, i.e. Rain Man or SlingBlade. It would also be helpful if it's something that won't depress me into immobility.

I'm a bit partial to Nell, because I'd like to get into the disability-as-contextually-defined thing... but maybe not...

What about "Adam"? I saw this a few weeks ago. It's about a gentleman with Asperger's.

Hi Sugar,

I am happy to hear you started! I know this is important to you. From a person who has a learning disability and speech impairment, thank you for going into this field. You would be wonderful teacher for folks like me!

I am not good with movies.

I found this. It lists movies and tv shows regarding folks with disability:

Good Luck!

I actually like that idea... how hard is it to find?

I am thinking Freaks... it's an incredible film and I think it will challenge my rather whitebread classmates. Plus I've seen it so many times I can write a review from memory.

(this two pages at once crap is annoying, I keep almost posting in the wrong thread)

Thanks for the input! Especially Rev- I'm going with Crippled Masters... challenging like I want, and I think the mixed messages of exploitation and empowerment will make for interesting writing.

A clip from Crippled Masters:

Here is another one, the sequel to "5 Deadly Venoms," "The Crippled Avengers."

Ya gotta love Shaw Brothers flicks from the 1970s. I'm a HK films fanatic.

I just watched it... really reminded me of Freaks in that the disabled characters are ultimately shown being confident and competent. Even in the scenes where they're newly mutilated and being abused, the abusers are clearly portrayed as vicious, ignorant buffoons. There is never any sense that their deformities are being played for laughs or even for shock value. It's a very strong story of empowerment... that just happens to be made with shoddy chop-socky production values and marginal acting. Not to mention absurdities like the boss villain's metal hunchback (which keeps slipping around noticeably during the fight scenes)... and the way dude's arms are cut off with almost no bleeding... and the stumps somehow don't get infected despite his rolling around in dirt, a farmyard, and a pigsty... and why the hell does the Old Master spend his down time contorted inside a basket?

My left foot is an amazing true story of the brilliant artist Christy Brown. He was a cripple who could only paint and write with his left foot. You must see this!

"A Beautiful Mind" is a good one too. It's about mathematician John Nash, who is a schizophrenic that learns to adapt without his medication..who then went on to with Nobel Prize.

I don't suppose the X-Men movies would count, would they?

Good Luck with creating this presentation! Keep us posted how it turn outs please.
