I'd like to talk about a music subject that, sadly enough, gets dismissed QUITE OFTEN.

World Music

I have struggled with peopl on this one for many years and I get the same damn reaction every time. "Well I don't like foreigners." or "It sounds like jibberish." or "I don't like anything besides (fill in genre)." Or my favorite one "I don't know what their saying and why should I care about what goes on outside the U.S.?"

MAN! How ignorant can one get? And I'm being nice.

Well I'm going on pure faith here when I say 'I know people here are more open minded and maybe even a little cultured'

Besides Rammstein, there is a whole LOAD of great foreign music out there and I'm going to share some with you.

In general.. I like bits of other kinds of music from other cultures in music. Not always in every kind of music... Various ethnic and regional sorts of influences. .

Sometimes though, it can come off kinda shlocky...

Ofra Haza was amazing. Its a shame she passed. But she did leave us with the beautiful sounds in "Prince of Egypt".

Hopefully, Natacha Atlas will come back through town at some point. I've seen her twice - once with TransGlobal Underground (she came out into the audience and danced with me!), and once solo. how all that power got packed into a 4'9" package is beyond me...anyway, here's my next contribution to this thread:

A cousin of mine has one of those bowls... the smaller high-pitched size. Very spooky but beautiful sound... like Tuvan throat singing, has shiver-making overtones that aren't captured by standard recording processes.

Sweet Lordy, I could blather about his forever. Anyone who knows me could vouch for that.

Anyways, if Servitor wasn't and sort of inclination for my obsession with ethnic music, I'll occasionally re-visit this post to bring you someting new.

Granted, there will be some that you don't like, but there's got to be some that you do.

Here's one of my favorites:

Oliver Mtukudzi- The Legend of Zimbabwe. I saw him once in Lansing and loved the show. Mind you this is simply folk music from Zimbabwe, but is VERY well written. It's not dark or trancy, but very rootsy.

BTW, the national language of Ethiopia and Eritrea is Amharic, that's likely what he's singing.

sometimes the groove goes the other way; Jorge Ben (like many other Brazilian artists to emerge in the late '60s and early '70s) was very heavily influenced by '60s American R&B.
