Im proud of my one friend. He is the rarest blood, O neg. And hes giving blood like, 50 times. And hes not even 20 yet. He goes every 6 months when he is allowed.

Im going to go with him next time he gives. :)

AB Negative is the rarest type.

O-neg is most sought after for blood transfusions, especially in emergencies where there is no time to do a type and cross (takes a full hour.)

AB is the rarest at 4% of the population.

I donate every 8 weeks and have been since my junior year of highschool. The last couple of times, though, my iron has been too low. So I'm going to try again in a few days.

I go sometimes. Sometimes I keep it to myself.

You only get money for donating blood plasma.

No problem

I was looking into donating plasma too...it just takes longer and is more intricate.

I try to do so regularly. My blood count runs high normal to high. It would be the equivalent of sludge, not a good thing on the heart.

So, doing good and dropping blood count to normal range? All for it.

I donate ever time I can. I've donated well over a gallon.

Also,FGM you should check out the England thing because I don't think there is a waiting period on giving blood if you've been there recently.

I last gave about 4 months ago...I'm due again. I used to give at least twice a year from age 17-22, but then I didn't give in Japan, and have only given twice since coming back. I'm overdue and need to give soon, esp since I want to get a tattoo at some point soon so I should do it again before I can't!

we should do a dgn blood drive.

I cannot donate as I have had west nile, have tats and piercings and am usually bordering on anemic....

Just wanted to say thanks so much to the people who have rare types and donate often.

One thing to keep in mind is that while O- is the most useful blood type, as it can be used on anyone, EVERY TYPE IS NEEDED. It's all well and good to say "thank you to those rare types or useful O- types who donate", but EVERYONE who donates is a lifesaver and deserves the same respect! All types are needed and appreciated. Don't feel like if you have A+ or O+ or B- or WHATEVER that you are NOT needed! Everyone is needed!

Also, relevant on a board full of freaks like us :wink, remember that you CAN give blood even if you have tattoos/piercings. You generally have to wait 1 year after a tattoo, and it's recommended to wait 1 year after a piercing as well, unless you can prove / are certain it was sterile. Best to just wait a year. So unless you get tattoos done on an annual + basis (which some of you probably do, but not all), you can still give blood.

Also if you are unsure, check the red cross website to see about the requirements. I'm A- btw :)
