I actually had the book this movie was based on on my bookshelf for the past few years. I never read it, and didn't realize until a short while ago that THAT was the book the movie was based on.

I won't bother to read it now.

It's a popular book here in NC - which is where it basically takes part, though on the far west side of the state.

Anyway, I really liked the movie, for the most part. I loved the acting, the storyline, the characters, etc.

Recommended.

There is no way for me to say what I HATED about the movie without a spoiler. So I'll just say there is something about the film that made me hate it. If you see it, you'll probably understand why.

There is a full 2nd disc with extras. I haven't been able to watch them yet. I know it includes commentaries, making of's, that sort of thing.

The movie was OK...

The Book was AMAZING.... and much fuller than the movie (I know that never happens)

It's the thing I hated about the movie that makes me glad I didn't take the time to read the book.

I tend to prefer books over movies. With some exceptions - in particular, stories that benefit from visual effects, such as the Star Wars films & the Harry Potter stories.

I'd make my kid read the Harry Potter books. But for adults, I think the movies are more entertaining.

Haven't seen the film & prolly won't... but the book was excellent. I was continually surprised by how it drew me in, given that the characters were people I would ordinarily consider "enemies" on some level. That's a sure sign of mad writing skills.

I absolutely, positively HATE the fact that he dies. I don't care if I'm lumping myself in with all the ugly Americans who can't handle a non-happy ending on my movies. I wanted him to live.

To have spent the time reading to the book and have him die would have pissed me off more I think. All that time - he dies. DAMN IT!Furious.gif

I felt about as pissed as I did when I saw that remake of that German angel film starring Meg Ryan and Nicholas Cage. I about threw the remote through the TV at that one (didn't want to see it in the first place, it was a "surprise" rental by Jon who thought I'd like it as a "chick flick".) Same damned thing with Titanic.

I just plain hate it when they do that. I mean HAAAAAAAAAAAAATE it.

I know the major point being made was just how ugly, wrong & violent war is. But damn it, they made the point well without killing Inman.

I will have to reprogram my mind to give it my own happy ending"

SCENE: Inman and bad guy are facing off on horseback.

BAD GUY: ...the confidence of youth

BAD GUY and INMAN shoot at the same time. Bad guy falls backwards on his horse, dead. We see INMAN sit very still for a scarily long period of time. Then slowly, he reholsters his gun and rides back to ADA.

They embrace, all is well - happily ever after.

Hah! I had a feeling that's what you were referring to! I felt the same way, & I'm definitely not one of those "ugly Americans"... usually that kind ov thing doesn't bother me at all. But this....

.... was like the ending of Night of the Living Dead- the poor bastard went thru so much, he just damn well deserved to live. Or actually, it was like he & Ada had both been thru so much, they deserved to be together.

It isn't like I NEED a happy ending to errthing I read or watch... hell, I'm perfectly happy if every single major character ends up dead. But this one... I kept thinking, "damn, couldn't they have just shot his leg off or something?"

But even with all that said... I'm still glad to learn they didn't change the ending for the film version. I REALLY hate when they do that.
