Simon Bar Sinister Posted October 24, 2010 Posted October 24, 2010 saw these guys there a few times: ...and it seemed like half the crowd at each show were other musicians. Man, I miss that place.
Reaper Posted October 24, 2010 Posted October 24, 2010 That is where I hung out often before going to City Club all the time. I think Lee did well with what she could afford and deal with there. The backroom was always full of interesting people and I miss them. Can't replace that place.
DJ Nocker Posted October 24, 2010 Posted October 24, 2010 I think I prolly would have hung out there... ...I wish I had a hang out spot some times, gets a little boring.
Onyx Posted October 25, 2010 Posted October 25, 2010 (edited) soooo damn good. Everyone who used to go to Ascension UK seems to miss it so. I regret I never had the chance. Edited October 25, 2010 by Onyx
Joey Deadcat Posted November 4, 2010 Posted November 4, 2010 Rhea's Obsession...hadn't seen Gary in several years. And, yeah, Ascension was a great after-club hangout. Winding down and hearing the more ethereal tunes being played...
Simon Bar Sinister Posted November 5, 2010 Author Posted November 5, 2010 the first time I went there, these guys were playing: I'd gotten a flyer announcing the gig while standing in line to get in to the Christian Death/Switchblade Sumphony/Big Electric Cat show. I went to Ascension, paid admittance in that little foyer, and the inner door opened...into so much fog that I couldn't see 6 inches in front of me. that and flashing lights. I was home. Attrition's leader asked me to run the fog machine while they played, but I was so busy watching them that I went too light on ther fog for his liking. :(

That was also Backspace's first or second show.
Simon Bar Sinister Posted November 5, 2010 Author Posted November 5, 2010 yep. i walked in during their 2nd or 3rd song.
DJ Saint Posted November 5, 2010 Posted November 5, 2010 yep. i walked in during their 2nd or 3rd song. We (Backspace) hated that place
DJ Nocker Posted November 5, 2010 Posted November 5, 2010 People should stfu and go to Northern Lights because AsUk aint comin back...
DJ Saint Posted November 5, 2010 Posted November 5, 2010 People should stfu and go to Northern Lights because AsUk aint comin back... 100% AGREED. Northern Lights is the new Ass Uk... except it's much nicer, sounds better, has liquor and isn't in some cracked-out neighborhood. Plus Nocker and I will take on any of you in shuffle board and kick you in your baby makers
Simon Bar Sinister Posted November 6, 2010 Author Posted November 6, 2010 People should stfu and go to Northern Lights because AsUk aint comin back... whatevs
Reaper Posted November 6, 2010 Posted November 6, 2010 I enjoyed watching Backspace in those days. That was around the time DeLien was playing.
DJ Nocker Posted November 6, 2010 Posted November 6, 2010 whatevs BUUUUUUUUUUUUUT you guys wont because you are all scared to try new places, even if they have a similar feel. So you will continue to let the scene die aside from CC and Necto Hilarious...
DJ Nocker Posted November 6, 2010 Posted November 6, 2010 Where is this "northern lights"? Its in the New Center area of Detroit, has NO cover, 2$ drink specials, and FUCKING SHUFFLE BOARD! ...and mafia booths...its neat.
DJ Nocker Posted November 7, 2010 Posted November 7, 2010 Alcohol or coffee house? I dont know if they do coffee, they do alcohol for sure. But there is a ton of seating, its more a lounge, hence why its called "northern lights lounge".
Cowboydave Posted November 9, 2010 Posted November 9, 2010 Indeed, good times were had there. I used to like going on Wednesdays with Mark Brekenridge before Jon Noble and I took over the night, back when Mark was still making his infamous mixed cassette tapes... As few people that ever showed up on any given night, I did have a lot of fun spinning there...
anoveskey Posted January 6, 2023 Posted January 6, 2023 I never got to experience Ascension UK while it was around, but thanks to that venue and an old friend in high school, I was introduced to a treasure trove of cool music. Which brings me to the point of my post: Does anyone remember a "DJ August" that would spin at A-UK? A long time ago, I had a couple of mixtapes of his sets that my high school friend loaned to me - "Songs For a Summer Sacrifice", and... the name of the other one fails me. But these mixtapes introduced me to Einsturzende Neubauten, London After Midnight, Deine Lakaien, Haujobb, Lestat, Heavy Water Factory, and a whole mess of amazing bands/songs. I've been trying to recreate these mixtapes for years, and any info relating to DJ August, or those long gone mixtapes is greatly appreciated.
Scary Guy Posted January 26, 2023 Posted January 26, 2023 I never knew them, or was able to go. Must have been before my time. Great list of bands though. If you want to talk about such music at length, myself and anyone still around would love to I'm sure. Sorry I'm just now seeing this. Don't log in too much these days, as there's not much reason to. Kind of a ghost town. I miss the old days :(

phee Posted July 24, 2023 Posted July 24, 2023 My old band played there... I loved the industrial drum circles. I was so high on my own energy back then.
Simon Bar Sinister Posted November 4, 2023 Author Posted November 4, 2023 I see Northern Lights got mentioned a few times above...they closed around covid lockdown time, but they've reopened. No idea what it's like now, though.
