So I am in the market for some new shadow colors but I never get any suggestions from the department store gals except for neutrals.

I have smallish dark blue eyes and a medium warm skintone and usually wear gold/bronze/copper/brown shades.

I can't wear black liner, it makes me look ill *wah!!!*

thanks a bunch~

Can I put something on here? -I need some makeup help, too. If I want my makeup like this:

What do i need and what do i need to know? Lastly, how do i get it off without wearing the flesh off my face?

How about soft greys and plums? Sheer shades. Nothing overwhelming. You can do smoky without doing intense.

Oh God....

You can use cream shadows, pencils, lipsticks. To remove it, DON'T use soap! Soap is evil. Use cold cream. That way, your skin is smooth.

Isn't Brenda the makeup guru? Ask her to make you look like Adam Ant when she comes to town.

What kind of look are you going for- subtle? moderate? knock 'em dead? Also what price range are you looking at- drugstore or department store? What lines do you use now? Also do you prefer powder (loose or pressed), pencils, cream or- ?

The shades you mention can work with greens or purples... try starting out with your basic look & accenting/intensifying with one of those colors. For the eyeliner, a finer line (like with a liquid liner) might do the trick... or try a dark bronze or green liner. Doing the liner in little dots rather than a solid line adds sparkle w/out a "heavy" look.

I am currently in love with Urban Decay, but then subtlety has never been something I look for in eye makeup. I've also been experimenting with mineral makeup... very wide range of interesting effects possible, from subtle to slammin', but takes a LOT of practice & experimentation. I like very strong colors, which can be hard to find since most makeup isn't formulated for darker skin and ends up looking pale & washed out.

Another thing to keep in mind is the tools make a huge difference- a set of decent makeup brushes & brush cleaning solution is a sound investment. The little sponge thingies that come w/most eyeshadow are only good for the most basic looks, if that. Using a good brush can make a blah color look completely different!

As you can tell, I'm helly into makeup & can ramble on about it indefinitely :swoon I''m embarassed to even say how long it takes me to get made up for an evening ov clubbing.

You mean if I've gooten it off from the time I tried it by then? Thanks Brenda!

I will ramble on when I have more time. And yes, mineral makeup is wonderful!!

Hmm! I will go take a peek at plumy-sheer shades as I have never tried to wear them.

My usual brands are: NARS, MAC and Chanel. I bought a set of brushes but end up using my fingers most of the time. All my shadows are either cream to powder or powder.

BTW: How to keep shadow dust from getting all over everything?

I do a minimal look for day and darker lipstick for evening...that's about it.

I'll have to get Zhuk to take a pic of me with both looks - perhaps it will help with ideas :)

I'm a Nars and MAC fan as well!

Getting the shadow off of your undereye area is easy: Don't do your foundation and concelaer first. OR, hold a tissue underneath while you apply. I like the first idea better. Less pain in my ass.

Kryolan is prolly the best bet for the Adam Ant look... it's professional stage makeup so it won't smear or rub off easily like lipstick does. I love their red & purple pencils, also the red shadow (I think the same one MsM. is talking about) ROCKS! True red eyeshadow isn't easy to find, I was ecstatic when I discovered Kryolan.

Keeping loose powder shadow or shimmer stuff from getting all over is one way good brushes come in handy... you have much more control with a brush than a spongie or finger- over how much you pick up and where it goes.

AFA drugstore makeup vs. status brands- I stopped worrying about buying the cheaper stuff when I was on Jeopardy and the makeup artist pulled Wet & Wild lipstick out of her kit (less than $2 at most drugstores). (NOT criticizing anyone's makeup choice- if you like it then it's worth it!)

Brands currently in my kit: Iman, Milani, Black Opal, Savvy, Revlon Street Wear, Physician's Formula, Urban Decay, Pure Luxe, Jordana, Black Radiance, & a few nameless cheapies.

Try a metalic shade like puter or silver.

Woah~ Thanks everyone for all the tips. I am going to the MAC counter later today to find some greens and plums to augment my collection of browns and bronzes: we'll see!

*heh* I used to be quite creative with cosmetics, but as I approach 30 I can't pull off what I used to *tho no lines or anything...just not 21 anymore* :)

Here's some recent pics - not in "going out" mode but basic everyday. *sigh* I do miss my bright red hairs at times *poop...job land is a tad boring*

*hmmm* Still, despite much tweaking, can I get my camera to not screw-up color balance.

I think if you used Black SHADOW rather than eyeliner, it gives it a softer look, and then highlight with some purples..maybe purples :wink . White skin to accentuate, red lips

Your eyes aren't that small!! And you're gorgeous!

Yes, bronzes are going to look great on you. ANY color that is yellow-based will make your eyes look really blue. Greys, especially sheer muted ones are good as well. Sheer plums, definitely. You can use a variety of light shades to mix and contrast. Just stay away from coral or bright pink shades near your eyes. I find that they make people look tired or ill.

Personally, I love wearing a beigey/white shadow on my lids, taupe in my crease, black liquid or cream liner, and red lipstick. VERY pinup girl. If I'm smoking up my eyes, I go for plums, greys, or greens. I make sure that the color goes all the way around and is blended so that you don't know where the shadow ends. Wear a more neutral lipcolor when you do a dark eye.
