Michigan Gothic Rock?

Recommended Posts

Are there any actual Michigan gothic rock bands in existence? Or for that matter post-punk or death rock? (By that I mean in the literal sense, not some darkwave/synthpop with goth labeling)

... are there even any in the Great Lakes region at all or is this genre pretty much dead in eastern North America?

There used to be a handful - Caelum Bliss, Missed In Diary, Black Ocean Drowning...

GLOD was an entity all its own. Would not have called them goth but I sure wouldn't call them industrial, either.

Gargoyle Sox - 80s Detroit deathrock; currently, John Koester has Trapdoor Spiders, which is still kind of gothy but has now been more involved in his dark country outfit Gravetown who sound good.

Not sure if Red Lipstick Death are still around. They're a MI deathrock outfit who have been about these past several years. And born-again Christian DR from what I hear.

We also had Dragon's Tears Descending who had a kind of Death In June sound. And there was Midnight Mourning.

Those are the ones who immediately come to mind.

Oooh! And The Hex! Interesting case there - 3 highschool boys who have never listened to goth or deathrock, set out to form a psychobilly band and serendipitously ended up with a nice dark, deathrockish/post-punk sound. Sadly, they've been broken up for some time now. Still see the guys at shows and mention has been mad of the possibility of re-forming.

In truth, as far as "goth/deathrock proper", there is little to none around here :(

Red Lipstick Death may still be around...The Goth scene is pretty dead in general around here. AS I stated in your welcome post, its mostly industrial/fetish... A couple of us have tried to start something up, but most people who are into it just want to live in the 80's and listen to only sisters and siouxsie. Instead of checking out new outfits like O Children and Minks... Every once in a great while a goth band will tour around hear.

I think Dum Dum Girls and Minks are coming to the stick soon...if they havent already...(post punky stuff)

Thanks for the great replies. I was worried there would only be the chirp of crickets.

The reason I ask is I would really like to attempt to set up some kind of concert/show/event/orgy or something. Wondering if there would be much interest, but even not it would be nice for there to be something.

If anyone has any contact info for anyone who might be interested in playing, organizing, doing shadow puppets on the wall or drooling in a corner, there's a drink it for you next time I'm at City.

I think her music is great but we might have some disagreement on the deffinition of "rock". I've never heard her use guitars or an acoustic style drum set, though I haven't browsed the full discography. Chiasm falls pretty safely in the electronic genre.

I forgot to mention Rhea's Obsession, didn't I? They were another 90s outfit.

weren't they from Toronto, though?

You're right - what it is is that their name always comes up whenever I try to remember this one Detroit band. I used to always get them mixed up with for some reason.

...

RANDOLPH'S GRIN...that's who...! That's who I always keep trying to remember! That just came back to me.

Me? Just peachy.

Knowing any other goth bands that come from here? No I guess not. Even they are getting out of this state.

That there was a Detroit Batcave scene, once upon a time, intrigues me...

Need to dig up something on Bill’s Corpse and Danse Macabre.

I don't know any gothic bands in Michigan; but, I've figured out the entire cd of Only Theater of Pain on bass and guitar if it makes everyone feel better!!! :)

A pity I can't find anything on this "Detroit Batcave Scene" that once existed during the early to mid 80s...

How would you define "Gothic Rock" ?

Oh I see. It's more slower paced than I imagine. Personally I'm into hardcore.
