It really is a national epidemic 2X worse than any "flu" or any other disease that has come through, michigan is bad, but its a country (and civilization wide) problem is it doesn't kill you overnight so we don't tend to give a enough of a damn to really make it an issue, no matter how hard the (tiny) health-lobbies try. By now everyone knows "eat less , exersize more" but it takes a lot to overcome the consumer culture and nature.

It was declared a national epidemic in 99? 2000? for adults (2/3rds of adults are overweight/obese) and just recently its now declared an epidemic among CHILDREN... which is crazy. But since the world is ruled by corporations not health-advocacy groups , the message is eat more and eat cheap, even with a lot of willpower only a very small percentage of people can overcome the "consumer" (literally) culture that is put out by the food companies. Even broke ass poor people are overweight/obese because despite the hype, food is cheap (and crappy food is even cheaper)

Another BIGGER problem is just plain old evolution. For 100k years we developed instincts in a climate of SCARCITY of food, so your brain tells you to EAT NOW FUCKER! Try as (most pepole) might, the brain wants more, because its supposed to want whatever it can get, since whatever it can get is not much for the vast majority of of life on earth. Because you don't know were your next meal is going to come from, well that worked great as a survival instinct when food WAS scares, but now it modern times (in the west) when food is abundant, its actually a hurtful instinct.

Obesity problems aren't any better here in Canada. A recent study by the University of Windsor found that nearly half of all 7th grade students are overweight or obese and ten percent have high blood pressure.

15+ years ago, we didn't have personal computers and the internet like we do now. 15+ years ago, kids went outside and played. Now all they do is sit around all day interneting and video gaming.

 Congrats on keeping your kids active. More parents should take a page out of your book.

I'd say it's more like 20+ years ago.. Closer to 25. In the Army we called it the "Nintendo Generation". The kids who never went outside, never played sports, just played Nintendo.. I won't lie, I was a part of that generation :) I was physically inactive most of my life until early 20's..
