I generally avoid scales. My weight and I have a long & complicated history and it's not a friendly one. So I finally decided to stop thinking about "losing weight" and instead try to focus on "being healthy."

I refuse to diet or view any foods as "forbidden"- that mindset just flips a switch in my brain and makes me crave crap that I don't even honestly want. I refuse to deprive myself or be hungry all the time. Instead I've been trying to add foods to my diet that are healthy and that I actually like and let the cravings for fat and sugar go away on their own. It's working! Likewise I've been thinking about gaining energy, being stronger and sleeping better when I go to the gym instead of shedding weight. It's hard, but I think it's working too. I just looked today and I'm down 48 pounds from my highest weight! I'm still big but it's good to know that what I'm doing is working.

Hey, congrats! That's a lot of weight to lose. Glad to hear that you're lifestyle in general is healthy. =)

Congrats to you!!!! I'm cutting out sodas and fast food. That is the hardest thing for me, as I love Taco Hell. But I just got on the scale and found that i weigh 151lbs. I'd just like to see 140 again....

Congrats! I'm trying to lose somewhere between 70 and 80 lbs to get to the "ideal" weight for my height. I'm going to quit losing when I'm happy with my body though. You are an inspiration!

Thanks guys! I try not to dwell on it too much (I used to make myself throw up- hey actually it's been 4 years this week since I stopped. Go me.) so I know I'm susceptible to unhealthy behaviors in this realm. I honeslty don't even have a goal weight- I try to tell myself that my body will settle at a natural healthy weight as a result of an overall healthy lifestyle, but damn is it hard to keep that in mind.

My first weight loss attempt was at age 11...so you could say this was 16 years in the making. Here's hoping I finally get it right.

Seems like we are all on the shedding some weight mentality as of late so I'll add my success story. I went from 289 to 187 in about 16 months by doing basically what saechalyn is doing. Once I stopped focusing on losing weight and just learned to be healthy the weight came off. I dropped the regular soda and really watched my simple carbs, dropped fast food completely other then salads and fruit and yogurt things. Additionally I added in a simple biking routine and light weights that I have sense stepped up to heavy weights. I found that this coupled with decent cardio work really quick taken the pounds off. I’m a big meat person so I dabbled with the whole Adkins thing but found that a modified more realistic version really worked well. It was closer to that south beach thing but I was cheap and never got he book. Anyway it took a lot of dedication and heartache but it worked. I'm now around 195 so I'm a bit higher then I'd like but that’s only as of late. I'm back at the YMCA again now trying to get that taken care of and trying to get my cardio up. I can't keep up on the dance floor to 5 hours of synth and industrial. Hello elliptical machine...

Good luck to all of you out there working on weight loss. It’s such a bitch but that feeling you get is worth all the pain. I gained so much self confidence and inner acceptance that I can honestly say it changed my life dramatically, if not saved it.

Great Job Saechalyn. I am very happy for you. I am beginning to get there myself. I will dwell more about me in another thread but your story was inspiring to me and I wanted to let you know.

Just read a statistic on the news today that every pound you lose reduces the load on your knees by 4 pounds every step you take

I definitely feel the difference. My knees don't hurt after a night of dancing.
