DGN Elections (discussion)

So, recently in another thread it was suggested that we have elections, and since I'm all for things being more democratic here we are.

 

There are a few questions though before we even get started, namely who is even eligible to run.  To which I'd say all current, former, and those eligible to become staff are.  New people, anyone currently or previously banned, etc... should be ineligible (but still welcome (unless actively banned) and very much encouraged to vote!)  Though I suppose there could be some type of internal vote to expunge any negative blemishes on ones record, and everyone deserves a chance to change and evolve.  I've never been a fan of eternal punishment especially after the primary punishment (banning in this case) has ended.  Once a felon always a felon is crap too.

What type of voting system should be used?  I like ranked choice voting/instant runoff, though approval is good too.  However each system has it's flaws, here's a fun video on two good ones:
 

What positions should be run for?  I think Tron is doing a great job as the site administrator and don't think that should change (especially since she essentially bankrolls the entire thing.)  I think a position of Director would be great though for decisions both on and off site, what other groups DGN wants to officially work with, etc...  with heavy input from the users.

A position of Vice Director could also be good so that if anything does happen then there is a clear line of succession.

We could also say that only members who have donated can vote in the elections too as a way to generate some revenue for the site.  I'm a part of another group that does this and it seems to be an alright system, though it could also potentially lock out the poorer members from voting.  I'm not even talking yearly dues or anything, just throw out a buck.  That other group is like $35 a year now!

 

Does anyone have any thoughts?

Also I put this here because "Current Events, Science, Spirituality, Politics, Religion & Sociology" but if it fits better elsewhere please feel free to move it.

I don't have much to contribute (I did just join a week or so ago) but I'm commenting  because I see your efforts and I don't want yout to think no one sees your efforts. I'll support just about whatever happens and I'll vote if this is something we decide to do.

With regards to the Donation Tracker, I removed it after Troy's passing due to the fact that site donations was not without its own challenges with regards to founder and member relations in the past.

 

However, if it seems appropriate to have it on the site, I will return it to its place in the sidebar.

After reading your post, I just realized that I actually had the position of Vice Director under Troy as he granted me executive powers over the functionality and decision making of the DGN forum.

 

The official title that was bestowed on me last year, with respect to Detroit Gothic.Net, was "Keeper of the Old Ways".  I even received an official handwritten letter from him.

 

Essentially, then, we should be holding an election to look for a new Vice Director.

I would put in for some sort of position, but I don't know considering how things went between Troy and I. I would say, if there's any serious issue someone has for me to not hold some sort of position, I'd offer for one.

The main thing I really want members to understand is that, although it is true that Troy founded this site and sparked the foundation for this community, going forward, for the foreseeable future, I am the one hosting this site and, accordingly, how this end of the online community will be managed under my administration.

 

If you are looking to hold a position, don't worry about how things went then, think of this as a new starting point where decisions will be based on your merit and what you bring to the community.

 

DGN has a member Code of Conduct and a Guideline to How to Become a Staff Member.  Although some sections are in need of editing, they are still in play and will continue to function as the basis of Detroit Gothic.Net.

 

So, to begin with, I am the main person you have to be concerned with.

Did the donation tracker just go from a certain point forward? I know a few people in times passed donating lots of money but it wasn't on there. Hell, I once held a fundraiser myself and handed over a jar o cash.

 

As for elections/polls, I would like to advise against such as they typically become a popularity contest and can leave hurt feelings.

With regards to the Donation Tracker, it went directly to Troy's PayPal account.  As far as how the funds were utilized, I have no idea.  The Donation Tracker was officially removed on May 20, 2023.

I am not at liberty to either confirm nor deny such alleged accusations. I am not aware nor have I been aware of any current former or planned operation or operations to eliminate potential political opposition, nor have I been involved in any such alleged operation if it were to exist... which it doesn't.

Nah, this checks out, not suspicious at all! 😁 I definitely feel like I won't be labeled a political dissident for the crime of not being a political dissident

Honestly, I'm kinda ruminating on this, there's a lot to unpack and think about.  For now, Tron is doing a great job running it, in the future I wouldn't be against some kind of voting system but it would have to be thoroughly planned and designed,  no need to rush it.

I totally understand your thought process here as there have been members, MODs and Admins that have been here longer than myself.  But until further notice, I will do my best to uphold the title of the rank of office that Troy bestowed on me prior to his untimely departure from this mortal plane.

this was why i never donated after the (one?) time i did - i asked troy to lay out the costs of operating dgn so the members could see where their funds were going, and for accountability. he refused. i was all for supporting the board, but had the feeling that the dgn donations were going to pay troy's personal bills.

I have no problem with transparency regarding function cost.  If DGN ends up holding a credit, it could then be put towards other uses such as support for events and/or things along that line.
