The night sky, the bright lights of the lamp posts, the police station on the corner, the fruit stand across the street, the bloodshot eyes of the drunk that hit me, my feet in the air, the sparks that shot out from my homestay mother's bike as his little car drug it down the street.

Fortunately, I was in Japan so the bumper of the car only came up as high as my mid-shin while I was riding the bike.  It felt more like getting hit by a speeding bumper car.  He actually hit the bike frame and the bike frame hit my leg and the momentum bumped me horizontally into the air and I rolled up his windshield and did a horizontal 360 spin about 5 feet above the roof of his vehicle and landed behind him.  When I saw him coming around the corner, we locked eyes and I said, "I'm about to get hit", so I braced for impact and tucked into the fetal position once I took flight.

 

I was still in forward motion when I hit the ground so I ended up rolling up to my feet and for some reason I immediately ran after his car as if I was going to stop it from dragging the bike.  I was more concerned about my homestay mother's bike than my bookbag which actually slid down the street and caught up to the vehicle by the time he had finally hit the brakes.

 

When I was in the air, everything was moving in slow-motion and I remember thinking, "I just touched the sky". 🤣

 

Because I was able to walk away from that, and the bike was still semi-rideable, I felt lucky and it was great.

You were very lucky.  I am a cyclist and I pay attention to some of the accidents that happen between motorists and cyclists. It doesn't generally end very well. 😭

Where did you stay in Japan? I spent three months in Tokyo City, which is near Nagoya.

I mainly stayed in Shiga-ken, Hikone-shi where I attended JCMU for 8 months.  I did a month long homestay in Nagahama-shi and various weekend homestays in Shiga-gun, Higashiazai-gun and Osaka.

 

I never actually got the chance to go to Tokyo, but I did have a group of classmates who (for lack of a better word) hijacked me to get to Nagoya University because I was the only one who could read the signs and train schedules.

 

JCMU is big on field trips, so I spent many a day in Kyoto and Otsu.  We visited Nara and Osaka once as they were very time consuming trips.

 

I got the chance to go back to Japan a couple of years later when my sister's husband attended JCMU.  My sister took me to visit her pen pal in Osaka which was a more leisurely visit than going with a class agenda.
