shadowdagger Posted July 17, 2005 Posted July 17, 2005 I just bought Anne Rices' Interview with a vampire, and The Vampire Lestat. Ive never seen the movies, and for me are a little hard to find, so...... has anyone read or seen these titles, are they good? Ive heard Anne Rice makes the best books, but ive never read them, not yet.
Nienna Posted July 18, 2005 Posted July 18, 2005 i have read everything she has ever written. They are in all, great books, with some that are (of course) better than others. Definately worth it to read more. She's one of my tried and true favorites!
Troy Spiral (13) Posted July 18, 2005 Posted July 18, 2005 I'll admit i've only read the first 3 Vampire books. I was enthralled with Interview and would put it on a "recomended reading" list. I'd say for sure , at least bang out Interview. I like Lestat's later summary of it as having a theme of "Behold... The Void." =) The Vampire Lestat was good. Queen of the Damned i wasnt as impressed with but i'd still call it a "good book" and if you read the first two, probably should finish the "trilogy" at least. Also if you cant deal with Anne's sort of old-school "descrpitive" style of wirting you might try Poppy Z. Brite, she has a much more action oriented MTV generation style. (although Ann can get pretty god dang "actionish" at times, she just usually takes her time building up to it and spends a lot of time setting up the atmosphere of a story arc , rather than just jumping right into the fray)
Nienna Posted July 18, 2005 Posted July 18, 2005 Yeah, I agree with Troy above... Poppy Z. Brite is awesome too... (And a COOL lady to boot.. met her at a Sci-Fi convention a few years ago.) Anne's writing style is seductive and sensuous. She's good at making you feel emotions you normally wouldn't, and I find her style relaxing to read, like someone is calmly telling you an amazing story. I do know you either love or hate her for the most part though. I guess it has to do with people's reading styles... or maybe their preference in media.
Homicidalheathen Posted July 18, 2005 Posted July 18, 2005 Some people are very picky about their vampire stuff. My daughter is new to it and loves the books. My freind is old school and hates them. I like the movies. I save my eyes for spiritual or knowlege reading only pretty much these days.
DarkVampire Posted July 18, 2005 Posted July 18, 2005 I've seen the movies which are good. I have some of her books but I haven't read them yet.
Rozzlyn Posted July 19, 2005 Posted July 19, 2005 Ive heard Anne Rice makes the best books, but ive never read them, not yet. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Anne Rice writes fluffy pseudo-Victorian softcore porn for bored teenagers. You're probably a better person for having never read them before. Furthermore, the historical and anotomical inaccuracies in Cry To Heaven were laughable -- especially when you consider the fact that she insists that she did oh-so-much research in both areas before writing a book about the castrati. The only reason I bought that book in the first place was for the porn in every fourth chapter and, as a bonus, I found it for 50c at a yard sale.
Nerdcore Posted July 19, 2005 Posted July 19, 2005 you need to read the sleeping beauty series by her.. I won all three if you woudl liek to use a copy .. it is a very sexually explisit book and so good!
sglgothmom Posted July 20, 2005 Posted July 20, 2005 I'm sorry i have to say I love anne rice novels. I have most of the vampire books and she's now started a new series which i'm starting to read now. Maybe it's because i'm a sucker for romance stories i don't know. However as far as the movies go... I loved interview i had read the book before i saw the movie and i had also read queen of the damned and lestat and then i saw the movie queen of the damned and hated it she so strayed from the book with that movie. But hey that's just my opinion.
holliwood66 Posted July 20, 2005 Posted July 20, 2005 Ugh...Anne Rice books are (for the most part) awful. I did read most of them years ago in HS as well as her Beauty erotica series. Over-romanticized drivel with waaaaaay to much unfulfilled homo-erotica and posturing for my taste. *bleh!!!*
DarkVampire Posted July 20, 2005 Posted July 20, 2005 Damn. People either totally hate her work or like it a lot.
Nienna Posted July 20, 2005 Posted July 20, 2005 Damn. People either totally hate her work or like it a lot. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Like I said....
Rozzlyn Posted July 21, 2005 Posted July 21, 2005 Damn. People either totally hate her work or like it a lot. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> That's how you can tell it's bad. If it was good, the non-fans would either be attacking her choice of subjects (rather than her work as a whole) or going "eh, it's not my thing."

pixiefae Posted July 21, 2005 Posted July 21, 2005 My favorite book of her's is Queen of the Damned. Definately worth a read after the first two you have there.
