I haven't been totally sold on VNV. They're talented musicians, for sure, but I'm not convinced they're really impressive or smart song writers...I like the philosophy behind dark electro industrial but I just haven't been very impressed by much of it (although what I've heard of Chiasm is really cool but I need to get the album and have a proper listen before I can change my mind.) The VNV albums I have (Future Perfect , Matter + Form) admittedly span a broad range of influences, from metal industrail, to techno to classical and there's even the occaisional mom-rock, Phil Collins-esque pop ballad. There are a few songs on either of the discs I have that are pretty good but If I play them after other synth music, Depeche Mode, for example, I find that VNV sounds like so much more horrible, drabble. Not many of the graver (or even raver DJs) seem to have a very real command of thier instruments, I've noticed and VNV are actual musicians, I'm not saying they aren't, it's just I'm not hearing anything so avante garde or cool from them, nothing as cool as I'd expect to hear, what with their popularity. I suppose I'm so criticle of VNV because they're so popular, in other words, if they are the front of this movement, I listen to them to try to understand better and assign their catergory a ranking in the context of culture or art...what I've come away with is simply a liking of the spirit of thier work without an overwhelming respect for the substance of thier work, itself.

For some reason I just had to get that out. Sorry BS9.

Glad to hear that someone else likes the Virgin Prunes. I loved them when I was a senior in high school. I just named my new baby rat Gavin--after Gavin Friday.

Gavin Friday is so over looked and the Virgin Pruins, on the whole, are too.
