This is one of those age old questions that goes back to the time when there wasn't an age old before it... But in answer to your question, a simple level of lonliness, people get no validation from within any more and are sitting around thinking about too much, instead of simply doing something productive with their time... which would then give it's own validation... so the reach out to the unfeeling world in order to feel alive, because they miss something, and feel that they can only see their reflaction in others...

Either that or women don't put out enough in general...
