Guest Game of Chance Posted July 31, 2005 Posted July 31, 2005 So my friend Nate and I, years ago, were talking about starting a gothic ska band. Since then, there have been some satanic ska bands (Mephiskapheles, and others). But think about it. A ska band, that instead of periodly saying , "Pick it up, Pick it up", would instead say,"Dig it up, Dig it up". Instead of referring to a band member or fan as a rudeboy, you could refer to them as a deadboy. I think this is a great idea. We thought of this like umm...15 years ago. Anyone know of a band out there that combines the elements of gothic and ska music?
Fierce Critter Posted July 31, 2005 Posted July 31, 2005 I would LOVE to hear someone attempt that. I don't honestly see where it's feasible, considering the basic upbeat nature of ska, vs. the darker nature of goth. Then again, "Nightboat To Cairo" has a somewhat gloomy doomy flavor to it...

Fierce Critter Posted July 31, 2005 Posted July 31, 2005 I suppose if you stuck to primarily minor chords, you'd be pretty close. You know, for whatever reason, I'm hearing NIN's "Sin" in a ska beat right now... This is enticing. I like to combine my ska plaids with black anyway, what's that make me - Skathic?

Paper Hearts Posted August 1, 2005 Posted August 1, 2005 Bauhaus and PIL (early) used horns a bit...I've never been a fan of Ska, personally but the idea is somewhat interesting, Ska rhythms punctuated by minor notes, is how I imagine it...seems like it'd be sort of primal sounding which would recall early Public Image Limited again, and even Virgin Pruins, I think a singer who howls like Johnny Lydon would be cool and of course the lyrics would have to be really special and possibly mention vodoo, frequently. Perhaps you could go back in forth, in the style of Jazz, between the various instruments, allowing a certain amount of beats per measure, for each, and of course, in a minor key, like I've said. -I've not been a real fan of Ska, but I love experimental things...I have heard Ska sung in Welsh, driving through Wales, and that was quite nice, compared to the beach-rock psuedo-punk, that we normally get here, i'll say that I actually enjoyed Ska, in Welsh (you haven't lived until you've heard Ska in Welsh). -Another point of interest is Iggy Pop's 'Party' album. This album has a bit of brass in it and although it is not a Goth recording, it could make some interesting points for organization of sounds.
Slept with ghost Posted August 1, 2005 Posted August 1, 2005 i like that idea alot i tend to have a weakness for SKA
