Bush to shut off GPS in event of attack...

"Apparently, President Bush is drawing up plans to disable sections of the GPS network in the event of a terrorist attack. The rationale seems to be that it would prevent said terrorists from using the GPS system to direct some sort of attack. The plan would shut down access not only to the GPS satellite network, but projects like the EU's Galileo. Ironically, this comes alongside the President's plan to strengthen the GPS network against deliberate jamming."

Only way I can see it being shut off in areas would be to directly jam it which is the opposite of what he wants to do by making it harder to jam...

The GPS system, not that you would know by the news report, was designed for military use and control of civilian access to the system was built into it. Personally, I have never agreed with Clinton's idea that civilian access to the GPS network was more impartant than keeping the civilians safe.

Yes, our founding father's intended us to be able to all carry PDA's. That was why they faught a war against Great Britain, was so that we might all carry PDAs. Honestly it is not a constitutional right to use the GPS system, it was a privilige for the military to allow civilians to use their system. But if the need is there, the government can do what ever they want with the system that they control. The government is designed to protect you and itself, and it will keep doing so whether you like it or not.

The ability for individuals to coordinate via GPS is an extremely major flaw in the security of our country. Unfortunately, everything is. At least they're not talking about restricting access totally. Just the restriction of access in the case of an emergency. I completely understand that.

I think we might all learn from the famous words that Ben Franklin spoke to George Washington on the day of our first presidents inaugeration. "+h4+ sur3 wuz 50m3 l337 r0x0r 5h1t w3 pu113d 0n teh Br1t15h b4ck th3r3. N0w w3 c4n u53 0ur PD4's in p34c3."

Actually, as long as you stay out of the political aspect of some of their news, they do have some great articles about the cool stuff that not only NASA, but the ESA and other space agencies around the world are doing.
