soothsayer Posted August 7, 2005 Posted August 7, 2005 Growing up many (or all) of us didn't have the luxury of hand held video games or a dvd player for those long drives with our parents. My siblings and I would play slug bug and other forgetable car ride games. I wanna find out how others past the time besides asking "are we there yet?" Another useless post because I'm a tad bit bored. :grin
Nienna Posted August 7, 2005 Posted August 7, 2005 I've always been a voracious reader.. even as a child.. so my nose was always in a book.. that or I was beating up my brother. *L*
Fierce Critter Posted August 7, 2005 Posted August 7, 2005 I'd always be stuck in the middle on the "hump" with the most uncomfortable ride. I constantly complained about how unfair that was. We mostly just looked out the window at what we were passing by. Most of these trips were up north to places like Traverse City, Gaylord, the upper peninsula, etc. So there were lots of interesting, new things to see. Sometimes we'd play "I Spy" or a variation of that. You either see something and say, "I spy something green" and the others have to guess what it is. Or we'd sometimes look for odd state license plates, etc. My sisters generally slept - they in the comfy window seats. I never could sleep in the car, so my trips were generally hours of uncomfortable, hump-sitting boredom. Arrival at our destination was never more sweet. My dad would get neck rubs from any of us on particularly long trips.
soothsayer Posted August 7, 2005 Author Posted August 7, 2005 I was beating up my brother. *L* <{POST_SNAPBACK}> I think it's mandatory for siblings to beat each other up on long car rides. :grin And the famous, stop touching me! :laughing
JaneDead Posted August 7, 2005 Posted August 7, 2005 we never really went anywhere that would have gotten the "are we there yet" and same as you sooth we just played slug bug
Guest Game of Chance Posted August 7, 2005 Posted August 7, 2005 I honestly don't remember. Is that a bad sign? =) When I was a little bit older (11-12ish), I would put my headphones on and jam out by myself...and try to get whoever else was in the car to appreciate what I was listening to...usually to no avail. Doesn't sound any different than how I am today.

Fierce Critter Posted August 7, 2005 Posted August 7, 2005 Oh, yeah. When my sisters weren't sleeping, we'd play the alphabet game, too. Airport Bridge Car (duh) Dog Expressway (duh) Flag Garage Horse... That was fun. I wanna do it again. Maybe I'll do it repeatedly on the drive back north.
The_Dark Posted August 7, 2005 Posted August 7, 2005 When we played we had to find our letter in a sign or something. You could not use the same sign for two letters in a row. Like, say we needed an H and we saw a road sign for "High Point Auto Sales". That would only count for the H and not the I.
Brenda Starrr Posted August 7, 2005 Posted August 7, 2005 We played Count The Roadkill and made up words with license plate letters.
soothsayer Posted August 7, 2005 Author Posted August 7, 2005 We made up words with license plate letters. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> I was just thinking of this one. I still make up words to plates but only when I'm with someone.
EvilEve Posted August 7, 2005 Posted August 7, 2005 my two younger sisters and i would sing along with the radio when we were young. we would also play volley ball with one of our heads. (i was usually the one to sit in the middle to keep them from kiling each other.) or we would tickel one another, and see who could make the other ones have to go to the bathroom so bad that we'd have to find a rest stop to go. i miss those time. oh! i forgot about count the roadkill! my sisters still do that. hehe.
damagedangel Posted August 7, 2005 Posted August 7, 2005 The vacations that I can remember just consisted of me sititng in the back seat going "this sucks this sucks this sucks" and making my dad mad, and then my mom trying to difuse the situation by saying.. "look at those big buildings" (in the middle of the hollers of Kentucky)
Killer_Bunnie Posted August 7, 2005 Posted August 7, 2005 I miss those days, I am the oldest of 3, and no matter what I did I never got hit, the littlest one did, he was in the middle, he was all mom or dad could reach! now that I am alot older, I am either in an over stuffed car, or the trunk, I would rather get into trouble playing stupid games like I did last week with "are we there yet" and " I'm not touching you"
Msterbeau Posted August 7, 2005 Posted August 7, 2005 We played all kinds of games when we were little. Like finding words that start with successive letters og the alphabet - On road signs and billboards. As we got older we started reading more and more.

Most of these trips were up north to places like Traverse City, Gaylord, the upper peninsula, etc. So there were lots of interesting, new things to see. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Those are the types of trips we took too. I would usually look out the window or read. I got introble one time because there was an inch worm in the car and I thought it would be funny to put it on my mom. :grin
phee Posted August 7, 2005 Posted August 7, 2005 20 questions was a fun game... Oh we would place bets on whether we would be beaten, or raped at the next rest area... man good times.
Homicidalheathen Posted August 7, 2005 Posted August 7, 2005 Me and my kids....well, we look kinda silly on the road. We do rave dancing in the car.....sing.....they poke and hit me. I am surprised I am still here. But we have fun!
The_Dark Posted August 8, 2005 Posted August 8, 2005 I still count roadkill.. but now.. I do it like The Count from Sesame Street. Two, Two dead racoons by the roadside,Bwahahaha. Drives the wife nuts....
Fierce Critter Posted August 8, 2005 Posted August 8, 2005 Oh, god. I'm so going to steal that and do that to Jon. That's brilliant. Reminds me of the time my mother and I were up driving around the Mission Point peninsula together. I don't know what got us started, but we started conversing in 1-word sentences. Me: Raccoon. Mom: Dead. Me: Yep. We were giggling like little girls. Man, I can't wait to be able to do that again with her. That and stealing apples from the orchards as we drive by... nummy nummy. They taste better when you filch 'em.
