Just wondering if absinthe kits are worth the money before I go and buy some??

No there not they dont make anything close to what real absinthe is also if you go try to follow recipies on the net for making absinthe you could put yourself in the hospital.Your better off ordering a real bottle offline.

The first time I had absinthe, it was the homemade variety. I was 17, and had never actually heard of it at the time, and forgot the most crucial ingredient.

Sugar.

That shit tasted like bug killer.

Not worth it.

Wormwood, the stuff that gives real absinthe its hallucinegenic properties, is a VERY finicky ingredient. Too much, and you can go to hospital, or even die.

And it's very hard to measure how much of the hallucinogen is in each piece of wormwood. The same amount in weight of wormwood could yield very different results.

Yup and it is physically addictive....have been told to use wormwood for my guts....it is nasty and extreme.

:wink OK if Absinthe is so DEADLY then why have I been making the herbal portion of it for over 2 years and never had 1 incident with death, overdose, or any of these other Urban Legends.

Truth is that people make up a lot of things about the green faerie because they follow the rumors that were started in the 1800's which helped ban the drink from the USA and most other countries. If you want to pay over $50 for a bottle then go for it..but I make the same thing the europeans sell. I even had it tested by Maxim magazine's tasting group and they sent us a letter of thanks. Along with certain celebrity clients such as Dave Attel, Kyra Shoun (Night of the Living Dead, John Borowski (director), Necrpphagia (metal band), Genetorturers (band), and a ton of others on the East coast as well as here in Michigan and Canada. Florida is our latest target so we'll see.

It's just like ANYTHING folks...in moderation all things can be great but if you get stupid then you pay the cost.

If you folks want one, I can host an absinthe party and prove that you would not die but get an enjoyable buzz in 7 flavors which not one company has except mine. I shit you not. Don't take my word for it, just get some.

Noir Leather is one of my clients as well...go grab one if you'd rather not order on-line. keith can help you, so can Courtney or Lisa.

I've worked with them before, and they are NOT worth the money or trouble. It takes A LOT of time, experience, and practice to get any decent results from them. It's so easy to get the real thing--online or in Canada--these days anyway. One bottle of good absinthe can last a looonnng time, so spending money on a quality product is often worth it. Try the alandia web site. Both Paper Hearts and I have ordered absinthe from them before, and they ship everything out VERY quickly.

Oh, I don't doubt that you haven't had an incident. You're a pro, or at least you've been doing this for quite some time. There is no denying that wormwood can be overdone though. It's not an urban legend.

i dont know.

i wish i had gone. i'd have found out for sure.

tbh on kits. i dont like them, i consider them a good way to send yourself into accident and emergancy (or whatever they call casualty there). be carefull. i'm still sure the kits are what sent Ron into hospital at christmas. :whistling

my experiance with absinthe is very hit or miss. it is all in the preperation. sometimes you end up with foul tasting crap. other times, smooth tasting nectar that is more or less instantly working after 1.

i've yet to get word from the guy i was talking too 3 weeks back. he got some classic "Head Wrecked" photos of me after half a bottle of whisky, half a bottle of absinthe, 3 mugs of mead.

they were amusing.....

:erm I hope you don't mean my cousin Angelbeast Ron being in the hospital...that's not at all why he was there :clover Just glad he's out IF INDEED that's who you meant...hell even if it's not. :woot: So you won't even give my yummy stuff a chance then eh? Ok I know when I'm not wanted you heathens :tear *creeps off with bottle in hand* :tear

if it were properly distilled. yes

Posted

Well, it's done. And it smells like black licorice.. normal?

I'm too skurd to try it :laughing

Posted

yeah the licorice smell is expected due to the anise.

as to the kits. this is where seaphyr takes over on preperation for consumption (past the preparing ito "absinth")

1/2 water and lots of sugar at first unless you like anise ...I got 6 more flavors so you can get something nicer if you like :cheerful

Saephyr,

I'm a micro brewer specializing in hard cider and I've long been considering using wormwood as a bittering agent.

Should I be using Artemisia absinthium, Artemesia pontica or Artemesia maritima ?

My studies have shown that it was preferred to use Artemisia absinthium instead of hops and Artemesia pontica is used in Vermuth and Wormwood wine.

My alchemaic studies on Artemisia absinthium suggest that the volatile oil (being the part I want) contains :

thujone 30-40%

thujyl 20-35%

and or acetic, isovalerianic, succine and malic acids 20-40%

cadinene 10-15%

phellandrene 10-15%

pinene 10-15%

So if I where to use common wormwood I should obtain fresh whole plant from at least 5 varied location to obtain a balanced reliable mixture.

what are your opinions?

:clover Lucky, lucky, lucky me! :clover :woot:

I have yet to have this type of conversation at home in my dear Michigan oh boy! If you should ever desire more information than this you can always write my website ...only because you'll get a more prompt response my dear.

Ok ...very simply put...whichever version you use for your bittering effect make sure it's not the 'petite' BECAUSE it has the 'least bitter' of the variances as well as the lesser Thujone content.

As far as the multiple sources, that would have to be due to preference. Due to the process being trial and error, taste being subjective.

What you have MADE is called mascerated absinthe ...keyword here FUCKIN' BITTER as all get out! :blink You can get it to be less puckery with the sugar and the water but to be technical, you'd need to filter w/ sharkskin paper and centrifuge it to get it to be a clear non-pulpy liquid :doh

Hence, the reason I suggested you just buy mine cheap since I do the distillation processes for you and all you do is add it to the alcohol. I just remove the work from the whole thing PLUS my blend is custom. Got lotsa people who swear by it so far and I like that feeling

So either get out your chem set my sweet or mix and try is all you can do. NOTE: nobody finds the perfect flavor on the 1st taste so play with it a bit and you'll get it. :cheerful
