Laptop Motherboard Shopping

Need a new motherboard. Don't ask - I can't take it. Looking for website sellers or other places that might have them for under $100.

Need one for a Toshiba Satellite Pro 4200 (Model Number 4260 DVD)

I've seen the part number P000292910 on a couple websites. Not sure if it has another number or if any other board would be compatible.

Most websites I've found are too overpriced. None available on Ebay right now.

Thanks

Yeah I just wanted to say good luck with that. Laptops today aren't really made to be disposable like most proprietary desktops. But being proprietary the retailers can basically sell you the motherboards for whatever they want and unless there is feirce competition get away with it.

You'd be better of selling it for parts, getting a new one, and if you need data off the old drive get a converter to convert it to IDE (they become useful later on if you work on machines, which you can make cash doing).

I already missed out on one motherboard and a scrap computer off Ebay that would have done the trick, both for under $100... so I'm hopeful. :wink :

Ok, thats for 100? How poerful is the computer? Because you can get decent ones for about 500 that might be newer and more powerful. Actually I just did a search and found a review at http://star-techcentral.com/computer/story...=reviews&sid=42 back in 2000. Seriously, pitch it and spend 400-500 more on a 1 GHz PIII or something along those lines. You'd more than double your power.

It's a 450-500 mhz PIII.

Don't have $500 to spend. Have $100 to spend. And we only use the laptop for fun & convenience, as in the playstation & TV are in the bedroom, so when one of us is playing video games, the other can be on the 'net or playing PC games.

Found 2 compatible motherboards. And the 4280DVD and 4280XDVD's use the same motherboard. Just a matter of patience & time...

FC in all honesty you're best off finding a new laptop. I think it may take a second coming of Christ to find what you're looking for.

1) I VERY much appreciate any help people have offered me in my attempts at rectifying this situation, as well as the many other times I've sought help with technology issues. I value the knowledge, experience, & willingness to share the many IT pros & "computer geeks" that populate DGN, and only wish I had something to offer in return for all the freely given advice & "helpdesk" support. THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU.

2) Not everyone needs the fastest, largest capacity, everything-from-soup-to-nuts product out there.

3) I have budget constraints that can't be messed with too much. The $$ is there, but being saved for a higher purpose. I can spend a little on fixing this, I just can't pull $500 or more out of the air for what's basically a complicated "toy" for us.

This laptop was a luxury, a lucky find for $30 at a yard sale. The things it does for us are NICE, and in many ways, convenient. But our lives will go on fine during the time it will take to either find a matching refurbished motherboard, a "for parts" model on Ebay, or some kind soul who can repair it within my budget constraints.

Since this motherboard is basically out of commission, I really wish I could find a replacement for the part I broke off, so I could see if I could just solder it on myself and get it running again. It could be there's more to it than that, but I'd sure like to at least give that a try. At this point, no worse damage could be done unless I "Pepsi Syndrome" it with a can of Chek Cola while it's all open on the table in front of me.

Do you know what exactly the problem with the current MB is? You said you broke something off?

<-- Does the happy dance

HUZZAH! I discovered the motherboard I needed for sale on Ebay today, and convinced the seller to add a "buy it now" JUST for me.

It's all mine, and for a total of $100 (including shipping).

This is so cool... Especially since a refurbished one on any website can't be had for less than $300.
