Well yes and no, according to the lady friend of mine who recently spent most of a day shopping for jeans, it has to do with the differences between manufacturers. One company's size 12 could be bigger or smaller then another companies. Sometimes when I buy a t shirt, the definition of XL can vary. An XL made by one company could be the size of a Large made by someone else.
