the eternal Posted September 16, 2005 Posted September 16, 2005 So, I'm listening to Paint It Black from the Rolling Stones and I'm thinking this is like the gothest thing Ive ever heard (not really but go with me on this) There is some really dark music out there, many with the themes you'd here in goth music, but by mainstream artists. What are the gothiest tunes you know from ungothy artists?????
the eternal Posted September 16, 2005 Author Posted September 16, 2005 Rolling Stones-Paint It Black Violent Femmes- Nothing Worth Living For Frank Sinatra- ANYTHING off Only the Lonely (it's maybe the most depressing pop album ever recorded- he called them his "suicide songs") Pearl Jam-Black
The_Dark Posted September 16, 2005 Posted September 16, 2005 Violent Femmes - Country Death Song Pink Floyd - The Final Cut
phee Posted September 16, 2005 Posted September 16, 2005 Neat Thread!!! All most all of Pink Floyd's stuff has struck me as Gothy, even though they are not considered as such.
The_Dark Posted September 16, 2005 Posted September 16, 2005 A good portion of the middle era stuff is... (middle era is Darkside - The Final Cut for those that dont know) Roger Waters is a damn depressing man.
phee Posted September 16, 2005 Posted September 16, 2005 A good portion of the middle era stuff is... (middle era is Darkside - The Final Cut for those that dont know) Roger Waters is a damn depressing man. Yeah... some of his solo stuff as well, like "Amused to Death" seems gloomy as hell.
The_Dark Posted September 16, 2005 Posted September 16, 2005 All three of his solo albums fully explore the pain of being human. The Pros and Cons of Hitchhiking delves into a man being insecure about his marrige and life. Radio K.A.O.S. explores self sacrafice for family and self absorbtion... Amused to Death is about greed and beign self centered. God I love that man's mind.
phee Posted September 16, 2005 Posted September 16, 2005 Yeah.... I don't know if he is so fond of his own mind though
DarkVampire Posted September 17, 2005 Posted September 17, 2005 "Paint it Black" The Rolling Stones "The End" The Doors
Homicidalheathen Posted September 17, 2005 Posted September 17, 2005 Phil Collins in Genesis: In the air tonight.
The_Dark Posted September 17, 2005 Posted September 17, 2005 OMG! I just watched The Black Hole last night!!!!!
phee Posted September 17, 2005 Posted September 17, 2005 OMG! I just watched The Black Hole last night!!!!! Sweet!!!!
TearSandrille Posted September 17, 2005 Posted September 17, 2005 The Final Cut album is my favorite Pink Floyd album ever. With The Final Cut being my favorite song, and it is damn depressing. When he did the in the flesh tour he played Southampton Dock, but didn't go into The Final Cut. I was thoroughly disappointed.
EatAjaxAndDie Posted September 17, 2005 Posted September 17, 2005 Sublime- Poolshark a very dark and depressing song. go for the acoustic version for the full effect. When Bradley says "One day I'm gonna lose the war" it seriously made mw and my friend cry. Mind you he was drunk, and I was too...but damn...thats harsh. Candlebox- Far Behind rather sad and gloomy song about his friends suicide. And thats a grunge classic. I could go on forever. And I mean it. This is why I limit my music conversations to actual human conversation instead of my dumbass typing all day :laughing
unchaste Posted September 20, 2005 Posted September 20, 2005 Patsy Cline "Walkin' After Midnight" & "Crazy"
Scary Guy Posted September 20, 2005 Posted September 20, 2005 I'd like to point out that under my definition of goth (which is widely accepted) that everything has the potential to be goth or ungoth.
phee Posted September 20, 2005 Posted September 20, 2005 I'd like to point out that under my definition of goth (which is widely accepted) that everything has the potential to be goth or ungoth. Kinda like "industrial"?
the eternal Posted September 20, 2005 Author Posted September 20, 2005 So, I've now come out of the closet as a big Floyd fan. I posted my personal motto as part of my signature It's from Time off Dark Side of the Moon
Scary Guy Posted September 20, 2005 Posted September 20, 2005 Kinda like "industrial"? <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Not even close Don't get me started Too late True industrial music to me involves power tools. The modern accepted definition of "industrial music" an instrument has to be distorted (usually guitar, synth, voice, or a combination thereof). There is a difference between true gothic music, and gothic oriented music too. In that way I guess they're similar, but not in the way you thought.
Fierce Critter Posted September 20, 2005 Posted September 20, 2005 "Paint it Black" is a favorite of mine, and I will agree with it's gothliness. Others on my list: A few songs by Concrete Blonde Something in the Way, Heart Shaped Box - Nirvana A song or two from Kate Bush (Notably a good part of the "Hounds of Love" album) Chris Isaak - Wicked Game The Smiths - How Soon is Now Crowded House – Into Temptation Peter Gabriel – Mercy Street Shakespeare's Sister - Stay With me Split Enz - One Step Ahead, I Got You Sting - Moon over Bourbon Street, Fragile, Tears for Fears - Change, Pale Shelter Some Enya Tom Waites - a song or two Soundgarden - Fell on Black Days, Black Hole Sun Lots from Nick Drake Cheap Trick - The Flame ...o.k. I'm kidding on that last one...
DarkVampire Posted September 20, 2005 Posted September 20, 2005 Blue Oyster Cult's "Don't Fear the Reaper"
the eternal Posted September 20, 2005 Author Posted September 20, 2005 FC-thank g-d you were kidding on the Flame. It was forced upon them to generate a hit. They refused to play it in concert. Ah yes, Nick Drake. I didnt know where to start with him. He sounds like this soft folkster. Then you hear the lyrics. Ian Curtis has nothing on that guy. Except, and heres where he's ungoth, unlike Curtis, when I listen to Nick Drake, I just want to give him a hug.

And they do play it in concert. Seen it. They've come to terms with it. It did help propel a 'comeback' of sorts for them. And if you want to give Nick Drake a hug, you're gonna have to start digging. He died from an overdose, and it's unclear whether he intended it or not.

But they didnt even write it. After awhile, I think they decided to surrender, surrender but not give themselves away. Yes, all the great ones do seem to take their own life, dont they? Anyway, here's one from left field. Neil Diamond-Love on the Rocks It's such a hopeless song.
