Bubba Ho-Tep

Fierce Critter

I've been renting a lot of DVD's lately. Some of these might have been discussed when they were out in theaters, but now that the old threads are gone with EZBDGN, thought I'd re-open discussions here.

First off, I'm not sure what I expected, but it's not what I saw. I got kinda geeky about Bruce Campbell & the Evil Dead films last year. So maybe that built my expectations for something more raucous. If I hadn't come with that expectation, I might have enjoyed the farce better. But as such, I thought it kinda slow.

Well, it also wasn't directed by Sam Raimi, so my thoughts going into the film were pretty much totally f-ed up.

User comments at The Internet Movie Data Base include this one: "The story of Bubba Ho-Tep is remarkably simple… Too simple actually, and if it wasn't for Campbell and a few ingenious gimmicks, this would have been an unnoticed and forgettable comedy/horror film." And that sums it up for me.

I think if I had come to the film with a better understanding of what to expect, I would have enjoyed it more.

I didn't have time to watch all the extras. I wish I'd had time to watch the "making of" short.

That's a really fun movie!

I just saw it (on the big screen at a club--with subtitles) the other night. Really funny stuff. A friend of mine who's a fan was there, so no confusion either.

must see if my local store has it for rental

I thought it was cool, kinda sad and quirky but I LOVE Bruce Campbell!

Ask not what your B-movie can do for you...

I love the way their actual identities were left open. It was quite possible that both of them were who they said they were.

I'm with you Critter - I'm a Bruce Campbell fan (*glances up at signed poster on wall*) so I was expecting a little more goofy. There were some entertaining parts, but overall is was fairly slow and some parts were depressing. Maybe if I didn't have expectations going in, I would have liked it more

Signed poster? How cool. I watched him on Xena as Autolycus and loved him. Read his book yet? "If Chins Could Kill: Confessions of a B-Movie Star"? It's GREAT. Reading about how he and other Detroit-area guys like Sam Raimi, Rob Tapert & the others got started is really fun. They had really cool times growing up and getting into film making together.

Yeah! Isn't it crazy how that all happened! I read it a couple years ago and realized "Damn....these guys were making a now-famous MOVIE at my age". It's weird that so many of them are big names in movies these days.
