OK, so they found a dog with a large gash in it's neck.... They also found a belt with blood on it in a parking lot.... Did they find a knife? Did they find anything that could have been used to slash the dogs neck? How do they know a person did this? Maybe the belt jsut happened to be laying in the parking lot and the dog bled on it. Maybe the dog was injured without any human participation. The dog may have jumped out a window and landed on something. There just seems to be a large amount of presumption going on.

***Some comments may seem graphic to some.***

I do rather agree with Dark on this one. It's true that aninmals can get hurt in our very homes under our noses without our even being aware of what's going on until it's too late. (I had a toy poodle once who ate some of my grey crafts paint before I was even vaugely aware she was in it.)

The dog may have hurt itself on it's collar trying to slip it and hooked itself on the buckle. It may have caught its neck trying to jump a fence. It may have jumped out a window, as Dark pointed out.

Trust me, anyone who knows me knows that I would never ever stand for animal abuse. But those who know me know that I also play devil's advocate sometimes as well.

The article did not state where on the animal's neck the cut was, IE under one ear to under the other ear, back of the neck, etc. This would lend a lot toward discovering how the animal was injured. Also, it makes no mention if the cut was jagged or smooth. No mention is made of the overall condition of the dog - whether its overfed or malnourished to give any indication if it's a stray. It could be simply someone's family pet who slipped its collar.

I can tell you that I saw this on our local news. The dog was found with the belt around its neck. It's neck was sliced open (possibly by the belt) on more of the right side than the left. He has a trache tube in his neck. That's all I know thus far.

Case Report

Someone brutally attacked, slashed and almost killed a dog in Anne Arundel County, Md., and police are trying to figure out who would do such a thing. The dog was reportedly found the morning of Jan 3 with its throat cut. His rescuers call him Clyde and police want to find the people responsible for his attack.

Police said it was Monday morning when a staff member found a bloody belt in the parking lot of Baldwin Methodist Education Center in Crownsville, Md. A trail of blood was also found that led across the parking lot into a fielded area.

Police investigated and found nothing until the woman who found Clyde called animal control.

"I knew it had to be rushed to the vet," said Ken Roy from the Anne Arundel County Animal Control office. "It appeared to be somewhat scared and it was actually still a little bit friendly when I came up to it."

"We treat some pretty serious lacerations from time to time and this probably one of the worst ones I've seen," said veterinarian Dr. Gene Bauer.

The dog was rushed to the Bay County Veterinarian Hospital with a 9-centimeter cut to its neck. It had also lost a lot of blood.

"He was treated pretty aggressively for shock and blood loss," said Bauer. "(He) was taken quickly to surgery so we could repair the wound."

The surgery was a success. But officers admit they will have a hard time catching the people responsible. They will be passing out flyers containing what they know and if police find who did it, they face animal cruelty charges.

I don't mean to come off as cold and uncareing. I love dogs, but really, it's a dog that got hurt with little to no proof that it was not an accident. There is something like 150,000 people dead in the Indian ocean region with thousands still missing and unaccounted for. We are in a war with young men and women dieing all the time. A dog that may or may not have been abused is just not all that high on my list of things to be upset about.

Don't get me wrong, TD: I agree that there's so much more to be concerned about. It doesn't change the fact that this is sad. I know that you're not trying to be a jerk.

Well, I stand corrected. I hope, if the did infact hurt the dog and were not trying to help it, that they rot.

I was just watching the news, and they said that there was an unidentified witness who saw these jerks attack the dog and drag him a little way down the road. It's just so messed up.

Though they most likely did abuse the dog.. I am not on the jury so do not know all the facts of the case as yet. The only report I have access to says they were trying to pull the dog into the van... not that they stabbed it. The cut could very well be accidental or the cut could have been why they were trying to drag it into the van. Then again.. they may just have been hungry. Dog tastes pretty good from what I hear.
