Harpo's

I have never been to Harpo's, but I've heard lots of scary stories about it, so many that I am quite reluctant to go there. Which is a shame because I hear about a lot of good shows going on there. Anyone want to share experiences-good, bad or ugly? Are the rumors true or exaggerated?

I have been there A LOT!!! (Did I mention that I like Death/Black Metal) It goes through phazes of being fine to being scary. About a decade ago they were hiring Neo Nazi's for their securety, luckely, they were bought out and it has not been too bad their since... The crowds vary on which band is playing... I have seen Slayer their and the crowd is brutal... When I see black metal, well the crowd kinda looks like City Club.

The layout is almost identical to The State Theater. Very cheep beer n'stuff though... In all my time going there I have never felt that I was in "danger" after they got rid of their Nazi problem. And even while it was going on I very much enjoyed the night when Napalm Death opened their set with "Nazi Punks Fuck Off" and told the crowd "Look you guys with the long hair, you guys outnumber these Nazi Assholes like 20 to 1, so if you see them starting shit gang up on them and help each other out...." The Nazi's left shortly after.

I'd like to go check it out......with a big, burly friend......just in case.

i went there once to see man o war. it was a dive, but werent that bad. the bathroom was freshly hosed out. you could tell by the way the ceiling dripped.

Go with a crowd/group, and stay in the well lit areas, & you'll be ok.

I love Harpo's. It is a great venue, it is huge, a great sound system, great shows! I've seen so many awsome bands there.

It IS, however, a very dangerous area. I have also heard the horror stories. IF you go, just make sure you go with a crowd, and bring some pepper spray or something!

It's gross, smells like a basement, has crap beer on tap BUT I go there alone all the time and just looked pissed so people just leave me to myself.

I live right by Harpos. It's shitfull. -Nasty and dangerous. People get stabbed and shot there a lot. Doesn't help that they don't card and serve $1 pitchers all night. I've been in there a time or two when I was like 18.

My ex boyfriend saw Gwar there... He said the place reeked and the beer was gross... But he thought it an apt place to see Gwar.

He did get accosted by someone in the parking lot who tried to get him to give them head in exchange for some crack or something. Kinda shady... :erm

Someone I knew was murderd in front of Harpo's after seeing a concert there back in 1995.....I'll never go back.

Come to mention it yeah... a teacher I had in school's son was killed at Harpos.. Maybe around 94-95... same guy?

Ive never been to Harpos, but Im not scared either. Ive heard the stories but Ive also never been interested in going either. My uncle's band played there 2 years ago. That was the only opportunity but I had to work that night.

LMAO ROFLMAO idont know why but the way the ceiling dripped struck me as funny, i can just imagine standing ready to go and DRIP.........WTF some one has got to get back in to target pratice.........

other wise i have never had a reason to go to harpo's but if i ever did have reason i would not be afraid, I guess it depends on your desire to see the band/show versus what you are afraid of, Dont let fear stop you from living a life especiall ywhen something is happening that you want to see. DOnt be blind to the dangers about it and get messed up with shady people, of course go with a group of people you know, carry self protection etc.... do prevetive measures of course but If it is your time to go nothing will stop it not even staying baracaded in your home.

Harpo's really isn't as bad as it once was, My own band has played a number of shows there, but I have really not had any problems of my own but I do have a few friends who have been rather unlucky. first thing is that the parking sucks and is very dark so some con man took advantage of this and broke into my friends car and pretty mych ransacked it and stole the radio and a few other items, but I think that is always a chance you take no matter where you go in Detroit. Some of the bumbs outside can also be a pain in the ass sometimes. Honestly though I not think Harpos is a bad place, it does draw a wild crowd, but that is what makes it all the more exciting. I usually go with a group of people anyway, but I do always tell my female friends when they are coming to see me to walk with people from your car into the building and from the building back to your car. Again Harpo's isn't a bad place, but it is located in a slightly bad part of town. I can go on and on about some funny stories, but I wouldn't wanna bore you all. Anyway I have never let these things (and some others) stop me from either playing at Harpo's are enjoying another act. Just bring a friend or two and you should be fine. I am gonna be there on the 27th to see Opeth and Nevermore, hope to see some of you there.
