Blackmail Posted October 21, 2005 Author Posted October 21, 2005 Green Lantern is the best hands down. The story: There is a planet in the exact center of the Universe named Oa. On OA is a advanced race with superhyper intelligence. They lived in complete prosperity but they had one rule: They were not to uncover the origin of their species. Most Oans obeyed this rule, they did not wonder where they came from. But one Oan scientist decided to build a time machine and tried to investigate where Oans came from. He used his time machine to go back to the creation of all life, only to find the reason why Oans were banned from finding their origins: a evil being was trapped in a dimension at the beginning of time. The original Oans had trapped him and suspended the evil being at the zero hour of creation. Well the Oan scientist had now unlocked the evil being and the being disrupted the time continium which ultimately started a war which Oa was dragged into. Oans: The war lasted decades, Oa was eventually victorious but many Oans perished. So the Oans decided to amass a an army to protect the entire universe from evil, they called this new police force the "green lantern corps". They recruited beings from every planet and race in the entire universe. Each member of the Green lantern force would wear a special green ring, the ring could form any object that the person wearing it wanted it to. So if a Green lantern thought of an axe, the ring would make a green axe and it would be as strong as an axe. Many GL's would use the ring for more powerful weapons, even shields strong enough to turn away nuclear bombs. There were 2 things about the rings 1) they had to be recharged every 24 hours by a lantern that every GL was given and 2) they did not work on the color yellow. So if a villain was wearing yellow it would not work on them. The Oans did in fact find people to protect Universe sector 2814, which was the sector that Earth is in. A few humans have worn the ring. They are: 1. Alan Scott. He was the first Green lantern from earth but he was also from an earth that was from a different dimension. His entire dimension was destroyed in the mid 80's during the story "Crisis on Infinite Earths". He now resides in this dimension but he isn't all that powerful. His ring is from Oa but it was sort of a test ring and it's only flaw is that it doesn't work on wood, but it does work against yellow. 2. Hal Jordan. This is the main Green lantern that most people think of. He was given the ring by a dying alien. He became the greatest Green lantern of all time. Though humans may not be the most advanced creatures in the universe, they have something the others don't: creativity. So Jordan used the ring as an art form. He was a Green lantern for years and years and years. Until his hometown (coast city) was destroyed. Everyone in his city and his family was killed. He went thru massive depression and asked the Oans to rebuild the city and bring it's people back to life......the Oans refused to mettle with history. Hal Jordan went crazy and became a villain named Parrallex and killed almost all the Oans and all the other Green lanterns. The Green lantern no longer existed. Hal Jordan: 3. John Stewert. Stewert was Hal Jordans backup and served admirably, when Hal Jordan destroyed the GL's, stewert joined another galaxian police force named Darkstar. 4. Guy Garder. An early GL but he was kicked out of the Corp for being to wreckless and risky. He didn't follow orders. 5. Kyle Rayner. He was given the final power ring by the last living Oan who came to earth desperate to find someone to give the last ring to. At first Rayner was a terrible Green Lantern but eventually became one of the greatest. After Hal Jordan destroyed the GLC, Rayner slowly rebuilt it single handidly. Hal Jordan aka Parrallex eventually turned good and saved Earth from the SunEater but then died. Hal Jordan was dead. There is a being that takes the form of the wrath of God named "the spectre". The Spectre is one of the most powerful creatures in all of existence. The spectre once possessed the soul of a man named Jim Corrigan but Corrigan found redemption and the Spectre then posessed the soul of Hal Jordan. Hal Jordan needed to find redemption in death as well. As the Spectre, Hal Jordan was vengeful and killed criminals, much to the dismay of the Justice League but the Spectre was far more powerful than the JLA so there wasn't much they could do. The Spectre is afterall, the spirit form of God's wrath. Eventually Hal Jordan was granted redemption by God. He also returned to his human form and stood trial on earth for the crimes he committed as parrallexx. He was found innocent, as Parrallexx was an evil spirit who possessed Hal Jordan. Hal Jordan was then able to rejoin the new Green Lantern Corp. All the GL's listed above are current Green lanterns. OA is slowly being rebuilt. That is where the story stands now. It should also be noted that according the a Green Lantern novel I just read (no not a graphic novel, a real book) that Oans were the ones who invented superhero's. Oans went to earth and were jealous that humans posessed something that Oans didn't: art. Humans had creativity, which Oans lacked. Oans then tried their own form of creativity, they used humans as their canvass and gave certain humans special powers and those powers were the Oans art. Wonderwoman, Aquaman, the Flash, etc....all of their powers came from Oans. Head Wreck Posted October 21, 2005 Posted October 21, 2005 i went off comics. got bored with OOT gestures and silly silly changing of storylines. but i recently began reading comics again 1 preacher this comic kick started my interest in comics. and still is one of my favourates, garth ennis 2 transmetrapolitan :D i want to be spider 3 crimson shoertlived, but hey, enjoyable 4 punisher, gart ennis welcome back frank to presant took one of the comics guilty of over emphasis and ottness and made it readable again, garth ennis taking things simple and adding a little realism to it (a little) no fancy gadgets, no battle wagons. just one sociopath in a grotty apartment with lots of guns. 5. hellblazer what i've read is very good. meethinks i shall have to find more if i get cash spare

Draco1958 Posted October 23, 2005 Posted October 23, 2005 Don't think I have a top ten. I started out reading DC comics, Batman, Superman, Worlds Finest, JLA, Legion of Super Heros, Superboy, Flash and Green Lantern. Stopped for a while then switched to Marvel, Spiderman, Ironman(until they switch to awful artwork), Warmachine, Avengers, West Coast Avengers, Captain America(including with the Falcon). Found an independent comic, Robotech the Sentinels that I liked. It was a B/W comic but I like anime.
unchaste Posted October 23, 2005 Posted October 23, 2005 In no particular order... Sin City (I love you, Frank Miller) Johnny the Homociadal Maniac ("You can call my 'Nny'") Squee (Tickle-Me Hellmo!) Lenore ("Fishes go 'pok pok pok'") Hellboy Sandman (and anything else Gaimen) Lady Death Poe 1602 Emily the Strange
pomba gira Posted October 28, 2005 Posted October 28, 2005 1. The Sandman, & just about any of the various spinoffs, especially 2. Lucifer 3. Groo (altho I haven't read it in years & have no idea if it's still going) Hellblazer looks good, but seems to be a shitload of backstory so I'm kind of intimidated to start on it. If manga was included this list would be much longer.

Fierce Critter Posted November 3, 2005 Posted November 3, 2005 I stopped comics cold-turkey in the mid 90's. I was an X-Man fanatic, born late, and became absolutely obsessed with owning EVERY issue of every title related. I was mostly interested in story, so it didn't matter to me if part of my collection was reprints. So I actually had every X-Men back to #114 in one form or another, many many being originals. Also had every issue of X-Factor, New Mutants, Dazzler, etc. and was working on Excalibur when I got fed-up with all the new titles being spun-off and the rise in costs and quit cold turkey. I sold my entire collection title-by-title after the first film. My favorites include (in no particular order) Sandman X-Men (and spin-offs) Motormouth (even had her hairdo for a while) Dark Angel (originated as "Hell's Angel") Ren & Stimpy Mighty Mouse (1990's version, it rocked) The Crow One-off's about bands like The Cure Heh. A lot of the titles I liked ended up short-lived. =(
