Detroit Club Nights/Coming from Grand Rapids

Hi there everyone. I just joined today here at Detroit Gothic. I guess I'll start by introducing myself. My real name is Eric, I'm 24, work at a crap desk job, and am married to a beautiful lady who enjoys dressing up goth now and then. ;-) I like a lot of music; right now I've been listening to Information Society, Depeche Mode, Coil, Current 93, Sol Invictus, VNV Nation, Assemblage 23, Pig, KMFDM,etc. Pretty typical industrial/EBM/neo-folk/synthpop stuff. So that pretty much takes care of who I am without starting a life story.

Anyway, I was just wondering how many people on the list make the trip from Grand Rapids to Detroit to go clubbing. Do you usually stay in the city the night of, or do you usually make the long drive home? I'm just curious because lately, Grand Rapids has been boring the hell out of me. The only thing that Grand Rapids kind of has going for it is 80's night out at Billy's. The music is good, but lately it's been overrun by indiehipsterjock douchebags. So, I need someplace else to hang out. :-) Are the club nights really that good in Detroit? What kind of music do they typically play? I'm not a huge fan of the Bauhaus/Sisters of Mercy kind of stuff, but I'll still dance to it. Basically, I'm kind of looking for a n00b view for a Grand Rapids couple that might want to get dressed up and go out dancing some weekend. Thanks for any replies. I hope to meet some cool people here. :cool

The last time we went to see a rave typ DJ in grandrapids, the show got out at two and we got home (driving back to ann arbor) at about the same time as we usually do when we leave cityclub at 4 am and drive home.... so im not sure how much of a problem the drive will be....

I would recommend staying in detroit for the night (or friday and saturday nights) and shop/hang out on saturday... have a nice meal or two on sunday and drive back to grand rapids

Thanks for the welcome everyone!

Yeah, I was thinking that staying the night would be the way to do it. It just gets expensive with hotels and all. =( I'm really not a fan of driving late at night as I get kind of narcoleptic. (yikes) I guess I'm just going to have to save some money then. We just bought our first house and it's sucking my bank account dry. :tear

Grand Rapids! Hah! You have it easier than me, all the way over at the lake ;) Takes me 3 hours if I'm lucky, sometimes even 4 if the traffic is bad.

I have made the drive and stayed till closing many, many times and watched the sun come up as I drove home, so yes, it is worth it to me. A hotel doesn't seem worth the price to me because I never sleep well in a hotel room anyway, might as well drive home and crash in my own bed. (of course, I do not drink so that makes a big difference)

Welcome :)

I'll be honest; I'm a drinker, especially in order to get me dancing. I haven't quite found another way to fight through some of those inhibitions yet. I'm not a fan of drinking and driving at all and I hate making someone be a DD. A hotel is probably the way to go.

So, you live on the lakeshore? Where do you live (just general vicinity), if you don't mind me asking? Thanks for the welcome.

I live in picket-fence hell (Grand Haven area)

The ramada hotel (the building where City Club is located) is a dive... but its still a hotel and its not very expensive compared to other hotels in the city or along the highway.

Ah yes, "The White Island." (implying lots of Anglo-Saxons and not many other ethnicities to those not from west MI.)

Ahh the age old debate.... What the hell is there to do outside of Detroit or A2 in this State!! First off. Welcome HipsterDufus. I'm glad you found out little corner of the classroom. Second to add my two cents to your question. I personally make a good deal of trips into Detroit for CC nights or an evening at Mephisto’s or Necto (which may be more up your ally musically. Hell from time to time I make the trek to Neo in Chicago if I’m feeling ambitious. I'll stay till close at any of the clubs and typically have a DD coming home (my girl doesn’t drink by choice and I too suffer from the no drinky no dancy syndrome). there are a group of us from the mid-Michigan area that make these treks to save on gas and keep each other awake, sane and alive during the night. Occasionally we do get a hotel and split up the coasts. You’d be surprised that staying the night someplace not entirely shady is cheap if its split 5 ways which leaves extra money for getting your drink on at the club. To that end, I have many occasions proposed ride sharing especially for those of us in mid and west Michigan. I even offer carpooling from Lansing and safe accommodating for the night if your still blasted after getting back to my place. Basically, we are all in the same boat if you’re outside Detroit. The "scene" sucks for us so we need to network better. As long as you and your wife are not complete asses I'm always game to have you guys along with my crew from Lansing to the clubs. I almost always go to Necto Mondays and City and Mephisto’s are on a case by case basis. If you, or anyone lurking on the board reading this is interested PM and will work something out. I really would like to get something organized out here so that we can all get a bit more involved.

Welcome! I complain about my little 20 minute drive to the club so I can't even imagine that long of a drive, but yeah, the Ramada rooms aren't too bad if you spit the cost with some people.

Awesome. Thanks for the invite. I wouldn't call us complete asses; just partial. :grin Anyhoo, I'll keep your name on my list for when we decide to get our rear-ends in gear and actually get out to Detroit. Sound like good times. I'm not sure when it will be, but sooner or later, boredom will have to get the best of me. :wink Thanks again!

I used to live in GR. I moved down here this summer. I used to come down to Detroit every weekend to club and see friends. The drive totally sucked, but GR is such a social wasteland that it was worth it. I don't know wbout hotels, I usually stayed with friends or drove home after the club. (Which also suuuuucks.) If you come to City Club, say Hi! I love dissing on my old turf with new people!

funny thing for me is we used to hit GR once a month for a Hotel party, (non goth but with in our interests or past interests) and we hated to freakin drive so we allways got a hotel room and spilt it with a few others......... Took us about a good three hours to get there if not more at times........

I am glad my interests have changed slightly and i only have about a 20 minute to 2 hour drive to any one hot goth spot in MI...but i still usually only go to City which is no more then 20 mintes away or so....

Welcome aboard.......there are good people here.... once you get past all the bitting and spanking :wink

I'm from GR. I'm bad about meeting new people so I haven't really thought about riding with others all the way to Detroit. I'm kinda wierd like that.

It takes us longer to get there cuz we have to take opur kids to Grandma's in the Flint area. SO it takes us about 3 hours to get down there. I haven't been to City CLub in over a year, it's killing me!!

But we stayed at the Ramada. I did't think it was all bad. But I'm not a picky person. So long as there were no live creatures and nothing extra came home with me I was ok.

I completely didn't even notice the reply... Nice to meet you. Hopefully we can work out something where we can all go to city club and live it up. I added you to my contact list, so hopefully when we get our butts in gear we can get in touch.

Yeah, actually I stayed at the Ramada when we went to see Assemblage 23. Great show, and the view from our floor was spectacular. Not the nicest hotel, but you could tell it once was beautiful. Honestly, I enjoy the decayed look a little. :wink

It's 2 hours to my parents who will watch the kids tehn an hour to Detroit from their house.
