Black Sunday Posted January 12, 2005 Posted January 12, 2005 Apple is coming out with some new products for you, anyone see highlights from Macworld yesterday? New $99 Ipod is already out. It's a stripped down Ipod with no screen, it is very small.....also a $149 version and both are out in stores now. Mini Mac.....apples cheapest computer ever......$499 but it has no monitor, no mouse and no keyboard. It comes out soon. It is SMALL!!!!! it is tiny, but the specs looked pretty good, looks like a good computer for the price. who else is a Mac fan like me?
JaneDead Posted January 12, 2005 Posted January 12, 2005 i got this in an email at the exact same time i was starting to read about it here i use a dell laptop. it is all i have known, unfortunately, for a couple/few years now.
SomeDanGuy Posted January 12, 2005 Posted January 12, 2005 Haven't checked out the specs on that mini mac yet. Are they down to the price of comparable PCs yet? How did they deal with cooling with such a tiny volume?
Jarodaka Posted January 13, 2005 Posted January 13, 2005 Mac Mini specs Basically, 256 MB, DVD/CD-RW, 40GB, 1.25 GHz G4 for $499. Start with 80GB and 1.42 GHz for $599. The 'memory can only be upgraded by authorized resellers' bit is annoying. Cooling is not a problem. The actual area is about the same as a laptop (sans monitor, of course). Considering all the computing stuffed into an iMac or any laptop, cooling is not that difficult. Also, consider that these are somewhat dated computer components so they are not running nearly as hot as a spankin' new P4EE or nVidia nForce. Then again, putting those things in a small space is entirely possible.
Jarodaka Posted January 13, 2005 Posted January 13, 2005 Oh yeah, and the price/performance is comparable to a PC. As usual, you can get a better performing PC for the price, but being able to become a Machead for $499 is quite nice. So while not as much power, the Mac Mini is no slouch and the slight premium for getting the slick OS X and Apple apps is worth it (probably, for most people anyway). The Mac Mini has the separate video proc and memory, which is nice. Most budget PCs have integrated Intel (i.e., really underpowered) graphics processors with shared memory.
SomeDanGuy Posted January 13, 2005 Posted January 13, 2005 yeah the Radeon 9200 isn't too shabby. Wow, I had no idea it was THAT small. That's pretty damn cool.
