**MASTERING IS COMPLETE** CD IS IN PRODUCTION**

If you want to be in on future releases, please let us know.

Hello fellow soundhounds...

DGN is trying to get together a compliation CD for later in Feb.

We are looking for original material only! from DGN members (no copyright problems)

I am looking for input from the other musicians on the board about how to accomplish this... IE: Feb. will most likely be too soon, but we will try. I would like medium to good quality of recordings. And most importantly how to finance the mastering and pressing of these CD's (Getting it done proffesionally will cost around $2,000 dollars at least, so if anyone is willing to do an "at home" job I am listening.

I believe that snailmailing tracks on CD will be the least amount of direct hassel and easy to keep track of (MP3's very in quality too much for me) and where do we mail them? well that is what we are trying to figure out. If they are mailed to me, I can compile them onto one CD and then we can worry about the mastering/pressing issue.

Anyway before you mail/present ANY material make sure that you are proctected in the copyright sense so that no forces of evil get a hold of our CD, then try to release your material as theirs (mailing a copy of your material to yourself, and not opening the package is the bare minimum way to do this.)

I am anxious to hear your thoughts, and soon!

awesome idea.

however I think you can get the whole thing done for under $2,000.

mastering is tricky, I know you can have someone do a very in depth, super quality job for several thousand dollars. But you can also get it done for $200. I have the software to do it, but I have never done it. If I knew how I would do it for free. But woodshed studio's in Detroit (or is it Ferndale?) only charges like $200-$300 and they have mastered many many local bands who put out CD's.

The actual printing/pressing of the CD can be done on the cheap too. I have seen some cheap quotes but I have no idea about the quality, I am willing to help you investigate though.

Hey, Maybe the compilation can be put together and I can attempt to master it myself (for free) and if it ends up not being good then we can look at other options.

The only problem is that I too think february is too soon. What type of artists are you looking for? Would synthpop fit in (sounds like Wolfsheim)? All in all this is a great idea.

Cool glad yer interested... and yes synthpop would be GREAT!, we are not going to go for any specific genre, as long as they are DGNrs then even country would work.....ok not country but you get the idea.

And yes, if you want to have a crack at it, that would be ideal, we will get to pressing/artwork later.

I would LOVE to add a song. I have some stuff done in a studio, but it's not the stuff I'd prefer to contribute.

I have one song in particular I think would almost pass for "folk goth". The only problem is, the only "good" version of it I have was done on a cassette player I could use like a 2-track recorder. NOT good. Especially dubbed about 4 times to add lead vocals, harmonies, bass, & lead guitar.

It's a pretty simple, arpeggio progression actually, that any decent guitarist could learn, and record in some manner that I can dub the vocals. I have a 4-track sitting around here somewhere that I EASILY could work with in mixing everything, no matter what the format.

Hell, I'd even be willing to work with a willing electronic artist in doing a special, DGN-only version remix on synths...

Phee, should I start a new thread on this, seeking some help? I'd REALLY love to be involved in this, but my guitar skills aren't up to par with the things I like to sing.

Posted

Feel free to... but this thread will work fine, I was orinally given a Feb.28 date to complete this, I don't think this is very realistic however, so I will see

YES!

If you are taking preorders I want one.

I'll skip lunch for a month if I have to. wheeee! We have some awesome talent here. I can't wait to sample it all.

Posted

Yes only $1,000,000 a peace. we havee financing

Posted

when do you need the actual songs by?

Posted

I'm not sure... when would everyone be ready

Posted

If I can find a musician willing to work with me, I can probably have this done in time.

I have the rough version on MP3, ready to provide if someone wants to hear what I'm talking about.

Posted

I am not going to be picky, as far as style goes, just quality.

Like I said, this is very preliminary.... I would like to find out more info from more poeple.

The intent of this CD is to highlight the talents that we have at DGN. If you like it, someone else will like it. I am not expecting it to come together and exactly be sold at stores, more of a by us for us type of thing. If it is high enough quality - let's see if we can get it in some local stores and or some tracks played by some local DJ's (They will receive promo copies).

The timeline - I am requesting that at least a limited quantity of these be released at an event which will take place on Feb. 28th. If this is totally impossible, then it is, but I expect us to shoot for this mark. AT the very VERY least, a CD-R sampler will be requested as a teaser for the real thing to be released at a (sooner than) later date.

I only have a tape with me singing "Angel" by Sara McLachlan. I wish I could contribute. I will, however, want a CD when it becomes available.

Feb 28th is prolly too soon.. I could contribute if you give me about 2 months from now.. I go to school 40 hours a week so I can only work on it on weekends, I have one basically drawn out, just needs to be polished and edited here and there, which I tend to take forever at :)

I've uploaded a short, sample file of the song I'd like to work on to my FTP space if someone wants to give it a go with me. PM me for the file address. It's just a few seconds of verse & chorus.

Sounds good.......I work as an engineer out of Tempermill Studios in Ferndale, I can do a quality mastering job for around $100 (depending on the length of the disc). We use Pro Tools and TC Electronics M5000 to do the processing. I can also supply the production master (its Red Book quality)...... And if you want a Firewerk or Ether Aura track for the comp, that would be cool too!

That sounds excellent, we have to discuss some of the logistics but will definitely get back with you on that, and of COURSE we would love to have a song or 2 from Firewerk and Ether Aura.

Having Firewerk master it probably is the wisest idea. I asked on the Pro Tools forum and pretty much everyone either laughed at me or said that if I have never done it before then I better send it to a pro if I care about the quality.

If Firewerk can do it for $100 then it's a bargain anyway.

I wish someone could set a hard date as to when the song needs to be submitted. Honestly I will need at least 3 weeks to get a high quality song together. I could get a song recorded, mixed at edited by mid February comfortably, anything sooner than that would be pushing it.

And no offense to the other artists here but my new song that I've been working on is far better than anything else that will be on the CD. I am the best songwriter in Michigan, probably the United States, and maybe even the world.

I'm gonna second Black Sunday on the "hard date please" request.

Also...

...What, exactly, is this "happening" we need to have this finished for;

...Where is the $$ for the product expected to come from? Is each contributor expected to cough up an equal share, or is some impresario footing the bill?

I really hoped this would happen last time this kind of thing was discussed. But I don't honestly know if such a quick deadline is going to work for many who don't have either a finished product already, or their own home studio consisting of instruments & recording equipment.

I'm hopeful, but expecting to suffer the disappointment of not being able to take part 'cause I don't have any of the above available to me, and can't find someone to collaborate with on such short notice. :unhappy:

I am very happy with all the enthusiasm! Glad we have such support on this.

A little bit of business and perhaps some answers to your questions:

Quality/Format:

I know everyone wants their material presented in the highest quality format, it is natural. Keep in mind though that you have not been asked to lay out any cash for this. And DGN has not been signed to a major label. If we can do professional for a reasonable price that will be great. Also I have seen many high quality home-burned CD's and packaging.

Submission Timeframe:

This has gone into a territory that it was not intended to go. This was not a call for musicians to create something in time for the printing. I have already heard and/or seen the CD's of some of our members. There is material already in existance, I know there is.

If you're work is not finished by the dates listed below, don't give up. There will be a volume 2. Since we are currently working on vol1 There would have to be a 2, wouldn't there?

Submit completed work by this solid date:

Monday, February 1, 2005

This will give us 4 weeks for the creation of the actual product.

OPTION A: If we do have 5-7 "quality" submissions from at least 3 artists - we will distribute a smaller scale, extremely limited quantity teaser edition, home burn likely, timeline will be extended by 2 months to April 1, 2005. Print quantities for the initial release would likely 50 or less. This option would allow us to raise the capital for a more professional product.

OPTION B: If we do have 7-10 "quality" submissions from at least 5 artists - We will do a full length CD with the most professional methods available within our budget and timeframe. Initial print quantities for this would likely 50 or more.

Why a Feb 28th Release Date:

TBA :woot: Keep checking the Event Forum

Repeating... "...What, exactly, is this "happening" we need to have this finished for?"

Black Sunday - I am in North Carolina. I have uploaded a short sample of the song I'd like to work on to my FTP space. PM me for information if you want to hear it. I'd love to work with you if you think we could actually get this done in the timeframe allotted.

Technically, it shouldn't be too much of a problem for us to work on something like this long-distance with help from the internet. (I believe that's how "The Postal Service" does their stuff actually.) I can submit the guitar version I already have to whomever would like to take over instrumentation/recording for me. They can hammer out their version of instrumentation, and submit a digital version to me either via FTP space or e-mail.

Though I don't have ProTools or anything even close, I DO have digital mixing software installed on my computer. It's enough to take a stereo instrumental track, dub two tracks of vocals & harmony vocals and even add vocal effects. I could either handle the final mix-down myself, or preferably e-mail just bare-bones finished vocal tracks to whomever's working with me so they can do the mix-down on better equipment.

I entered a songwriting contest the same way actually. The company provided a downloadable instrumental track, and I used what I've got to add 2 tracks of vocals, complete with some pretty cool sounding "telephone" like effects, chorus, etc.

But between waiting for 2 paychecks (2 weeks?) and a deadline of Feb. 1, I don't know if it's feasible for us. Though the song IS pretty simple, and it's not like another version can't be done another time, you know?

If not, well, Vol. II I guess...
