That is true.  I bought the Gotham CD awhile back and every time I try to listen to it, I just get so bored.  It seems so minimalist.  I'm sure there's reasons why scores of people like them.  I just never caught the hang of their music.

<{POST_SNAPBACK}>

I am not a fan of that CD. If you ever get a chance, check out Burning From the Inside or The Sky's Gone Out. Those are two of my favorites.

It doesn't sound like you have really heard much Bauhaus at all.  Especially considering that "No New Tale to Tell" and "So Alive" are both by Love and Rockets.  3 of the 4 members, but totally different band with a very different style.

<{POST_SNAPBACK}>

Oh, jeez. That's how my mind is working right now - I was up until 9:30 this morning and slept until 3:00.

Yeah - duh. Of course it was Love & Rockets. Nyeerhh... Brain meltdown.

And I do believe "Bela" is the only Bauhaus song I know. Was the Ziggy cover done as Bauhaus? I like that one.

I love Peter Murphy, definitely. I own everything he did up until the one with "Subway" on it. I need to hear more Bauhaus. Recommendations for downloads, please. There's room on my CD shelves if I like what I hear.

Yes, they did cover Ziggy Stardust.

Favorite Songs include:

Dark Entries

God In An Alcove

Slice of Life

Kick In The Eye

Passion of Lovers

Good luck.

Can't say if I like or dislike Goth music since I am new to all this and couldn't tell you what I have heard is by a Goth band or not.

projekt always had great compilations too. how I found most of the stuff i listened to back then.. i mena when yer liek 13 you cant really go anywhere to hear the music.. less its your friends older "creepy" brother

It took me about 5 years total but I have the entire PWEI album collection on cd. only one burned. I even got some vinyl. I just love how they progressed and changed their sound through the years.

<{POST_SNAPBACK}>

Ever listen to the Gothic Rock compilation on Cleopatra? There is some good stuff on there.

Do I pass the test?

<{POST_SNAPBACK}>

There is no test. I just find it ironic that on a website with the name DetroitGothic.net, there are very few people that listen to the music that spawned the culture/fashion.

I know a lot of you like EBM, but I'm not asking about that.  I'm also not asking about punk rock or hair metal.  Simply goth/industrial.  Please don't post that you like VNV Nation or Manson and therefore you like goth music.

Just curious...

<{POST_SNAPBACK}>

Yes I definitely do like some of it, but not a steady diet of it.

I've seen 4 of those bands...maybe 5. I can't remember if I saw Switchblade Symphony or not. Was never into the Sisters, although I hear they put on a GREAT live show.

Switchblade symphony live was my "official" introduction to the goth scene. (I liked a lot of pop-ish goth-y things like the Cure, etc, but never had a name for it) It was 1995, and my friend's girlfriend was mortified by my showing up in a denim skirt, black bodysuit and flannel (ah, the 90's).

I fell in love and never looked back.

Yeah it would have been in that time frame. I wish I could remember. '95 was a good year for shows...saw Pigface, Love and Rockets, Peter Murphy, The Misfits, The Sex Pistols, Bowie/NIN...

and I was on a lot of acid back then... :blink

I haven't been to a lot of concerts...maybe 15 ever? I was always poor and lacking transportation.

my taste in music is too strange and varied to just listen to "goth music" which i kind of think is an abstract term anyway. the playlist i have now is a mixture of a number of bands/artists i listen to constantly.

Modest Mouse

Sisters of Mercy

Ministry

Siouxsie and the Banshees

Switchblade Symphony

the Cure

Voltaire

Genesis

Brand-X

Lemon Jelly

London After Midnight

A Perfect Circle

Cake

Elliot Smith

Jack Johnson

and random others.

so i guess i do listen to it, but i have a LOT of other stuff thrown in there.

I always thought of Cleopatra as the K-Tel of goffdom w/ all the goff/rivet cover CDs of mainstream bands.

Remember when other than some 4AD, Nettwerk and WaxTrax! stuff (they were not exclusively goth labels) there were really only 2 major independent labels, Cleopatra (which me and my friends referred to as dirty goth aka the stuff I liked better) and Projekt (clean goth)?

Yes. Not gonna name drop atm, but I feel ya.

It's all about perceptions I guess.

I love music that makes me actually MOVE. It's not common contrary to what you guys see at the club. I have to recoup for at least 2 days after a great Saturday night. Goth , punk, house or whatever if it makes you do your thing ....who cares what someone calls it or not right?

Just wiggle your butt or glide ot whatever you feel inside man it's awesome!

Seen several of them as well:

Frontline Assembly - Seen them a couple of times, feelings were that they were fun shows to go to, but nothing particularly outstanding sticks out about the shows.

Front 242 - Saw them in Chicago for the Re:Boot tour...one of the best shows I've ever been to. Paid regular price for a scalped ticket, Project Pitchfork opened for them (probably the only time that that band will play in this country), and when 242 came out the entire floor turned into a combination of rave/mosh pit for their entire set. Most high-energy show that wasn't a punk show I've ever been to. >sigh<....the shows in Chicago are always better.

Sisters of Mercy - Have seen them 2-3 times....and they're always hysterical. Something about Andrew Eldritch coming out on stage looking like he's trying to be David Bowie, smoking like a chimney through the whole show, and stopping to explain how the Sisters are a ROCK band, not a goth band makes me laugh. Musically, they are very tight and the show itself is pretty good.

Siouxsie & the Banshees - I've seen Siouxsie & Budgie tour as the Creatures many times, but it was very nice to see the rest of the gang there as well for the 7 Year Itch tour. Have always had a crush on Siouxsie (still do), and the woman is like a fine wine. They had a cute Japanese pop-punk band open for them who all dressed as Powerpuff girls, but Siouxsie & co. just blew them away.

Switchblade Symphony - All they need are pom-poms to round out the Gothic Cheerleader bit.

Razed in Black - Haven't seen them as a band, but Rommel incarnated as DJ RiB is a riot.

My first sub-cultural show of this nature was Download, after the tour bus got lost in Southfield for an hour or so. Then they blocked my car in with the bus, so got to talk to Mark Spyby and Cevin for a bit while waiting for them to leave.

1996, and I remember Spyby saying that he thought goth & industrial were dead & that techno was where things were happening and would shape the scene.
