so i'm in lakeside mall today w/ an old friend from high school and as we walk past hot topic these kids pop up, looking scared to death and practically whisper

"i dont mean to offend you, but could we take a picture of you? we have this sociology project and we're supposed to have examples of 'different kinds of people'"

and i thot that was cute and i'm all smiley and friendly like "sure of course"

but these kids seriously looked like i was gonna cast a spell on em or at the very least scream at them for suggesting i'm "different"

i'm one of the most friendly people i know, i love people, and i'm really nice. so are a lot of other goths and freaks and whathave you that i've known and hung out with. i just happen to like dog collars, fishnets, and dreadfalls too.

anyone else have any stories like this? comments? i thot it was a cute story, those kids made me smile.

I get stereotyped because I have tattoos and unusually-colored hair. People think that I'm some partier or do drugs because of my look. When they find out that I'm pretty much a homebody, they're shocked. I'm in management, plus I'm also a makeup artist. I carry a Louis Vuitton bag. I actually own two. I have nice clothing. Nicer than what I've had in a long time. When I'm in my casual attire, it's holey jeans and tee shirts. My ink is visible.....so what?! I have a look. My "look" doesn't imply what my lifestyle is. I'm not offended at all. It actually makes me laugh.

I get stereotyped by other goths...I look fairly normal (despite the shaved head and tattoos)...the reality is I'm more goth/punk rock than most of the so-called goths out there...

No specific story to share, just the multitude of times i actually watched parents take their child by the hand and move to the far side of the aisle i was walking down. and the numerous times some crazy old guy has said something like 'haha, you gonna be somebody?' the usual...

I was harrassed and stalked by some 13 year old assmunchers a few months ago. Who were screaming "HEEEEYYYY ARE YOU GAWTH????!!! HEEEEEEEEYY!!!!!!!!! HHHEEEEEEEEYYY !!!!!!"

and stuff like that. It was amusing and i was trying so hard not to fall down laughing. I wasnt even dressed goth, i only had on black pants, shirt and trenchcoat.

This sounds like the stupidest sociology project I have ever heard of. Not to mention RUDE! Those kids SHOULD look scared to death - their "A" rests on chance meetings with strangers, who may or may not fit their profile and who may or may not care to be photographed. This is learning? What sort of respectable school project would encourage children to approach strangers and ask them inappropriate questions? Oh, the more I think about this, the angrier I get. They're supposed to take pictures of people who are different? What if they saw a child whose face was disfigured? Would they tell her the same thing they told you "that they are to take photographs of people who are different"? Treating people like tourist destinations is NEVER a kind thing. They SHOULD be scared to death, their educators are failing them.

Well, I can only say I'm glad they found a sweet, good-natured woman such as yourself that day at the mall, and not me, because I would have yanked them by their ears back to their mothers. To treat people like that! Horrid!

One afterthought: If the kids are attending paparazzi school, then I retract everything I said above, and this behavior is completely appropriate.

The people I work with definitely know I'm different. When I'm working, I have to wear slacks, a button down shirt, and a tie. I actually own several and a few suits which are way too good to wear to work. Maybe someday if/when I get a "real" job.

But then when I go clubbing, I'll swing by all gothed out and my co-workers give me these strange looks like, "So that's what you're really like."

But then I'll be on my way home from performing a magic show at a country club or some other posh event and I'll swing into Walgreens to pick up some snackage and I'm wearing one of my three different tuxedos (the one with tails is my favorite). My co-workers give me an even stranger look than the goth clothes received and they ask if I was at a wedding or something. Boy are they shocked when they learn I actually own those tuxes and don't rent them.

One evening I was meeting up with some friends so I swung by Walgreens to pick up some soda. When they saw me in pants, a t-shirt, and a casual shirt unbuttoned and hanging loose they asked, "So, are you trying to be preppy today?"

And finally, if I can't sleep I'll throw on some jeans and a sweatshirt or a flannel or something and hang out at work and everyone asks what's with the grunge look.

One gal I work with is entirely confused. She asked me what I was; whether goth, preppy, grunge, or what. She just doesn't get it. I am me. I am none of the above, yet I am all of the above. My wardrobe ranges from leather thong all the way up to tuxedo and I feel comfortable in all of it. Do I have to fit into a type? If I'm one, am I not allowed to be the other? As an actor I have played many roles. As a person, I have lived many roles. I am a blank slate, a canvas to be painted upon and my "social grouping style" changes to fit my mood. I am nobody yet I am everybody at one.

very well put. thats why i put quotes around goth most of the time when i'm talking about myself. i just appear to fall into the group to a lot of people.

definitely know what ur talking about in that post... i used to dress in big band tshirts and big pants and hoodies and such, all black, in middle school and one day i wore jeans and a "prepy" button up tshirt and even my close friends were like whoa ur not goth anymore???

At Fuse 2005 i was with all my "Raver" Friends, i ofcourse dressed the part for my self in what i would choose to wear, we all had our hair a diffrent color, one was orange one was purple i was hot pink, one was pure white...we all kind of have this Bright Color thing with our hair on a regualr basis... We had a blast with it, we had a Black Lady and her Grandaughter come up to us, the grandma started to ask questions and as we answered the girl got comfertable came from behind her grandmother and asked question as well, at the end the grandma said "she was so amazed with your hair, she asked me where white people like you came from" That was the funniest thing i think i ever could have heard. We all laughed and still laugh about it to this day.
