what do you enjoy in a song?

Being a musician I tend to enjoy the music melodies in a song over the lyrics. It has nearly always been that way for as far as I can recall. Then again most of the stuff I tend to listen to, you can't really understand what is being said lyricly anyway (unless you read the liner notes).

I know that many people are quite the opposite of me and they enjoy the lyrics more then the other elements of a song. Many of my friends say that they enjoy the lyrics because sometimes they refelct things that they have thought or felt.

Still I myself am sticking to the music over the lyrics.

you know what ... this is a hard question for me to ask myself ... but i found the answer more easily found then I expected. I like the climax of a song .. I like a song to bulid up and then brake and overflow .... perhaps thats why I like older music ... hence the obession with Roger Waters and THe god Morrison at a very young age .. that and my mother was a fucking hippie lol ..

Since I'm a musician I have to go with the music. For without the music there is no song but you can have a song without vocals. I like many different styles so it's hard to say what I like most. It depends on the song and the songs style. As far as recordings go, I appreciate great prodution, not overly produced but a producer that gives great attention to detail can make a big difference. There's a lot to be said but I think that covers it well.

I like the music. I generally don't pay much attention to lyrics. I like the sound of things, or not. If I pay attention to words in a song, it's generally the sound of the words, not what they mean that appeals to me.

A lot of songs get "ruined" for me when I do pay attention to the meaning of the lyrics. Luckily, songs in languages that I don't know can't get "ruined" this way. At least not until I start translating the lyrics and go Eeeewww Yukky Lyrics !

Anyway, I write poems [who doesn't], but I usually don't think of them in terms of music. Playing instruments and writing/digesting words are two separate thought processes to me. But then, my main instruments require the use of my mouth to play, so mouth usage equates first to "music" in my brain I guess.

Also, other than playing instruments, my main interest in music is dancing. And for that I could care less what the lyrics are. My body only pays attention to sounds and movement, not things that require usage of my brain, like lyrics.

So I lean towards instrumentals. Words are kinda extraneous a lot of the time anyway. Plain old music can say a lot without words.

Depends on the song. Classical sounds better to my ears all instumental....I don't even like the boys chorus for long.

I am a poet and so I can get into something for just the lyrics for awhile, but if the song sucks.......It will get on my nerves eventually, the way it is written I mean. Like that song Hey ya. I hated it at first.....then I liked it because it was silly...now it is just there.......I don't really care anymore. Still surprised it took off so well. Oh and that Macerena song. That got on my nerves. Both the music and the lyrics.

Lyrics to me, are very important.

Tells the story, and it either makes me a beleiver or not.

Vocal deliver as well - is very important. Emotion is the rule of thumb here, which is why so many chick singers are better than dudes.

On the musical side of things - take me for a ride, shift it around a bit, show me some color. Unless of course, its one of those songs where the almighty groove is teh foundation, and in that case, gimmee.

it has to be an even mix the song cat sound great until the lyrics start and the music itself has to be good for me to listen to it long enough to let the lyrics start

Anyway getting back to the orginal question. I enjoy the music in some tunes and the lyrics in others. The music of a song is what attracts me before I pay attention to what is is being expressed lyricly so I suppose music would get my vote.

The music is th most important thing. If there's no decent rhythm or a decent beat than I'm not going to pay it any mind. Some of the music I listen, death metal, you don't know what the hell they are saying unless you read the lyric sheet.

The first thing I here is texture, not melodies, not vocals, but the feeling of the sounds.... I can listen to a whole song without any melody/vocals at all, if the texture is interesting. Next the melody and "sound of the vocals" Lastly lyrics... I can find myself having memorized all of the lyrics to a song, without actually thinking about a message... I just memorize it phonetically

I would say that about 70% of the music I like doesn't have words anyway

im a fan of hardcore and metal and if you know much about either of them, most involve screaming/growling. the lyrics are powerful though, and thats what i enjoy, the beat of the song is importatn, but whats being said i think is what is most neccesary for a good song.

Songs also do not nessarilly have to have a beat or melody to be amazing... Check out "The Eyes of Stanley Pain" by Download, or some Steve Roach tracks, or Merzbow

Music is exactly that, without it the words are nothing but poetry, and I can just read that if I want.

Music can be read as well, however it cannot be heard by reading (unless you have a mind for it).

Both do make a perfect song, but I do enjoy many instrumentals.

I had to go with the second one because songs don't have to have lyrics or vocals for me to like it. I mean, sure, if it does have lyrics, then the music together with them make the perfect song ... but I've also heard songs where the vocals SUCK, but the music behind them is amazing.
