Different monitor/display problem

With the help of a couple kind DGNers (thank you!), I was able to troubleshoot and fix my previous monitor/display problem.

But now I have a different one.

The simple: When I go to play this breakout style game I have, when it switches over to the game panel, the display is HUGELY too wide.

The complex: what I did recently was update the driver for my NVidia GeForce 4 graphics card. That came with this whole new control panel for changing everything to do with the monitor display. I cannot find an updated driver for my monitor itself - a ViewSonic E771.

No matter how I change my resolution, or what I change it to, when I bring up the game board, it reverts back to this hugely wide screen with most of it being off to the left and right.

Proper resolution for that game is 800 x 600. But no matter where/how I change to that resolution, it reverts back.

I contacted eGames, and their helper absurdly recommended I reinstall my operating system. I told him that was an awfully drastic suggestion for such a problem, and I won't be doing that.

I can't contact nVidia because their help request form pretty clearly indicates they don't give free support when their chipsets are OEM.

By the way - I was able to successfully change the resolution on said game when I was playing one night. And the resolution I changed to wasn't even the recommended, and it still worked. I have been completely unable to re-create whatever it was I did when I got it to work that time.

Any clues folks?

yes. Refresh Rate Override. Look for it in your drivers panel. then set the refresh rate for 800x600 to be the same as what ever it is you have your refresh rate set to.

I know the things you speak of. But I'm not sure I understand what it is you're telling me to do with them.

I can change my display settings, and my refresh rate. But how do I know which refresh rate to change to to go with an 800 x 600 resolution? They're separate settings.

My default refresh rate is 60hz.

ok.. deep in the video drivers panel is a section called Refresh Rate Override. Most 3d games will try to use a refresh rate that is other than what you have set it too. This is where you can force it back... if you dont see this option.. I'll snd you a file that turns it on.

Alrighty. Tried to find that myself, and can't. If you can tell me where I should be looking, I'll try that first.

I didn't find the refresh rate override yet, but I did change my resolution to 800 x 600 and my refresh rate to 85 and it displays correctly now.

I'll see what I can google about that RRO, and if you get back with me on that I'll follow your instructions.

This, however, is much better than what I had before. So thank you VERY much.

hee hee hee. I JUST found that on Google, and checked here to see what your response was going to be before I downloaded it.

I did find the display settings you were talking about, and sure enough, it doesn't give me that option.

I'll run and install that download now.

Damn, that's cool.

Thanks, Dark. :grin
