gothicmom Posted January 24, 2005 Posted January 24, 2005 He's got the chicken pox. He's having a hard time of it. He doesn't have a fever but the spots are driving him mad. Daniel went to the store and bought some Caladryl for him. But he is still an unhappy camper. I called the school around 9 this morning. The lady said he was the 5th chicken pox call in!
Onyx Posted January 24, 2005 Posted January 24, 2005 Poor little fella :( I also used Aveeno oatmeal baths with my kids (or you can wrap dry oatmeal in cheesecloth and stick it in the tub but it's more messy).
Ginevra Posted January 24, 2005 Posted January 24, 2005 Aspirin and Calamine lotion were the only things that helped me when I had the chicken pox. I had them when I was about 10 or so, so I remember it quite well. He doesn't have a fever which is good for him, but the itchyness is hard to bear sometimes.
Onyx Posted January 24, 2005 Posted January 24, 2005 Aspirin isn't used for chicken pox anymore because some kids developed a really bad reaction (Reye's syndrome). I'm sure most of us had it given to us as children though. They have warning labels added to children's aspirin now because of it. I'm hypersensitive to this sort of thing though since I work for hospitals and read a lot of reports where there are reactions like that. I bet Children's Tylenol would help too though.
gothicmom Posted January 24, 2005 Author Posted January 24, 2005 We bought some pain and fever meds for him yesterday, tylonol stuff. He had a headach and a slight fever.
fallennon Posted January 24, 2005 Posted January 24, 2005 If I remember correctly (and I think I was like 5 or something) the only thing that made me feel better was a bath. I know that when I have dry skin Aveeno helps the itchies go away...I saw that Onyx suggested it and I would also reccomend it. I hope it all goes well!
Dubh Aingeal Posted January 24, 2005 Posted January 24, 2005 I have no real suggestions for you as I only had 3 chicken pox when I had mine... 3 dabs of the pink calamine and I was good to go...
Brenda Starrr Posted January 24, 2005 Posted January 24, 2005 I have no real suggestions for you as I only had 3 chicken pox when I had mine Jeez, Dubh! You got lucky! My kids haven't gotten it (yet). Wayne didn't get it until his prom!
Lilith Posted January 24, 2005 Posted January 24, 2005 all three of my kids have already gotten the chicken pox vacine so i have not had any personal experiance Although my daughter does get scarlet fever every year (usually comes with a killer rash) any how we use bendryl creme on the rash might help the chicken pox too but i dont knwo for sure i ahve also ground up oatmeal for her (in the blender) and put htat in the tub and it washes down the drain just fine when it is ground up like that they also sell something called a sketer stick it is used for incect bites but it sort of numbs the itching
Dubh Aingeal Posted January 25, 2005 Posted January 25, 2005 Jeez, Dubh! You got lucky! My kids haven't gotten it (yet). Wayne didn't get it until his prom! <{POST_SNAPBACK}> To be quite honest I wish I had had a full blown case of chicken pox when I was younger. From what I have been told and understand, I have a very large chance of getting a case of the shingles since my case of pox was so small. Typically those getting the shingles had mild to near non-existant cases of the pox as kids...
The_Dark Posted January 25, 2005 Posted January 25, 2005 All my kids but one have had them. All had pretty high fevers. Children's motrin works damn good on that.
Nienna Posted January 25, 2005 Posted January 25, 2005 My mom gave me and my brothers a cool bath with baking soda. It really helps! It's also great for having a ton of mosquito bites or a sunburn...
Brenda Starrr Posted January 25, 2005 Posted January 25, 2005 Crap. Come to think of it, I've never had them. I don't want shingles.
fallennon Posted January 25, 2005 Posted January 25, 2005 I forgot about those...I can't wait until my son gets them...NOT
JaneDead Posted January 25, 2005 Posted January 25, 2005 my ex got them when he was an adult and he was super super sick. he had to take medication for it. every time i read this thread i think about rugrats and when they were afraid to get the chicken pops.
fallennon Posted January 25, 2005 Posted January 25, 2005 It makes me think of South Park when their parents made them get chicken pocks so they paid a hooker to give their parents herpes...a little twisted but oh so funny...Cartman singing "In the Ghetto..."
gothicmom Posted January 25, 2005 Author Posted January 25, 2005 I never had them as a kid. When I was 19-20 Bishops bothers and sister got them. So he got them from them and I only had about 10 spots! Mild fever, mostly general yuckiness. I found out a month later I was pregnant with my daughter. My daughter had them in kindergarten. Poor thing didn't get to miss much school. She had them over spring break. I think she missed about 2 days. My son had the vaccination!!! I found this info on familydoctor.org The varicella vaccine is a shot that can prevent chickenpox. It is called varicella vaccine because the varicella virus causes chickenpox. Up to 90% of people who receive the vaccine will not get chickenpox. People who get chickenpox after having the vaccine have a milder form of the disease. Ah well.....he doesn't have it too badly. I've heard of kids getting them in there eyes and other unseemly places!
Ginevra Posted January 25, 2005 Posted January 25, 2005 Chicken pox vaccinations? They have those now? Does it work like flu vaccinations in that it just gives you a small amount of the virus to deal with? Or is it like polio and because of the injection, then you never get it at all? Onyx, yes, my mother's cure for *everything* was asparin. It wasn't harmful, usually, and it made kids feel like parents were *doing* something. Oh, wait. . . . do those questions mean I'm showing my age? *runs away*
gothicmom Posted January 25, 2005 Author Posted January 25, 2005 Here is a link for a news article that pretty much explains how it works. I was really hoping it meant he wouldn't get it at all. BAH!!! http://dermatology.about.com/cs/chickenpox/a/chickenvacc.htm
gothicmom Posted January 25, 2005 Author Posted January 25, 2005 It makes me think of South Park when their parents made them get chicken pocks so they paid a hooker to give their parents herpes...a little twisted but oh so funny...Cartman singing "In the Ghetto..." We were talking about that episode last night.....when Cartman is sitting in a tub full of Calamine lotion!!! "AHHHHH, yes you guys!!!"
