So I almost died the other day

I have had the most heinous mono from hell, ever. Last friday my tonsils got so swollen that I could barely breathe so I had to go to the emergency room and the idiots at Beaumont Hospital let me sit there in the emergency room while they tended to a chick with a bad rash.

I stayed the night at the hospital and the steroid they gave me was great, but the nurses and staff at beaumont hospital were a complete and utter joke. Thru the whole night they neglected patients.

But this is the same hospital who left my Dad unattended after he just had a stroke, he fell and hit his head and went into a coma and suffered brain damage.

The bottom line is avoid William Beaumont Hospital (13 mile and Woodward) at all costs.

Wow, Ted. That's awful. Are you doing any better?

Next time don't go the ER for swollen tonsils.

Go to a Doctors office or a clinic.

NEVER go to the ER unless it is life threatening...for REAL for real

What defines an Emergency? Use your discretion, but I wouldv'e gone to a clinic or my PC.

BTW...Mono is bad news. I had that also. :doh Ouch

Yes, they have a good advertising scheme, but they are really no better than other area hospitals.

Remember all the babies that died because of the fungus from nurses artificial nails? Beaumont.

Uh, so "Do YOU have a Beaumont Doctor"?

Yikes. That's horrible. Glad you are okay now.

Actually swollen tonsils that interfere with breathing and need steroids really are life threatening. I've had reports at my job where people have actually died from asphyxiation because they didn't get help in time. It can happen fast sometimes.

Any time there is trouble getting in air it is life threatening, whether it's an allergic reaction or swollen tonsils.

St Joseph's in Oakland county has a 29 minute guarantee that you will be seen by a Doc..

I hope you are feeling a bit better, and get well soon.

I didn't know about some of the stuff at beaumont, but I do know that after my grandmas stroke they let her fall as well because they didn't even put up the rails for her, the baby thing is new to me and made me pretty nervous. I never could remember the name of st. josephs, I just fall back on providence, because it's close and I like the doctors there.

Wow, I guess the title "I almost died" didn't sound enough like an emergency, huh?

First of all it was friday night and all clinics and doctors offices were closed. Secondly, as stated above, I could barely breathe.

Once the idiots at the hospital realized this they hooked me up to a machine to guage my breathing, when they saw the results the face of the nurses dropped. They threw me onto a cart immediately and wheeled me straight into the emergency room and injected the steroid. As the doctor said the next morning, had I not gone in, there was a good chance I might not have made it thru the night.

Not to be rude or belittle your opinion, but that seems rather simplistic to me. A broken arm isn't really life-threatening (unless it's a compound fracture), but you wouldn't want to just shine it on till your primary care doc has an opening. Also, a lot of folks can't afford to go to a doc or urgent care, both of which may demand payment up front. An ER is legally obligated to at least evaluate anyone who walks in.

I used to work at a county-run public health clinic. Our available same-day or even next-day slots were very limited. So if someone came in with any kind of immediate problem, 9 times out of 10 we sent 'em to the ER. So yes, it would be best to only go to the ER in the most dire situations... but a whole lot of folks don't have that option- a sad fact of our screwed-up health care system.

I HATE it when I almost die. Nearly as much as I hate dying.

Oh, and that's such total crap. Breathing is one of those "system critical" functions that really shouldn't wait.
