Tech support from India

This is how my day has gone today

http://www.illwillpress.com/tech3.html

I've had to call 2 companies today, Vonage and Tracfone (my daughter's cellphone is through them) and both of them connected me to India. If they can not solve the problem you get connected to a U.S. person, but only after being on hold forever.

One problem I ended up figuring out myself and the other they could not understand what I was asking so I ended up hanging up.

grrrrr

Wonder what would happen if we all asked to speak with someone based in the US on every single call? I'd like to stop giving these companies my business but it's nearly impossible to find anyone who doesn't have their tech support and call centers outsourced anymore.

Ha, you think that's bad? I talked to a person in the US about my cable modem. It went something like this.

Them:"What seems to be the problem"

Me:"Your DNS servers are down"

Them:"are you connected through a router"

Me:"That's not the problem"

Them:"Sir are you connected through a router"

Me:"yes, but that's not the problem, the problem is your DNS servers are down"

Then she goes into this pre recorded speach in her mind about how she can't help me if I'm connected through a router. So I asked to speak to someone who knew more than her, she said she couldn't transfer me but I could hang up and call back, so I did just that.

Next person was a guy, and I told him the problem. He said "I have to talk to the tech depratment about it" and put me on hold.

While on hold a friend on line gave me the IP addresses for SBC Global's DNS servers. Which I promtly hung up and put them into the router, bypassing the WOW defualt DNS servers. Kinda surprising that it's running even faster than before. Pages load up pretty quickly.

So I had to solve my own problem and talk to aggrivating tech support, this was like last week.

At least if they outsourced it to India they would know what a DNS server is lol. Some kid there got their MCSE certification when he was 8. It gives college graduates trouble.

:devil Because of this kind of crap, give it time there will be no jobs left in the US.

More than half the time I end up solving the problem myself also, or explaining to the guy or gal on the phone exactly what the problem is and how to fix it from their end.

This is sad because I really have no education in computer science at all, just what I've learned myself from tinkering and reading. I should not be able to solve the problem better than someone who is getting paid to do it.

Some of the India tech people do seem to know their stuff, but the communication problems I've run into are so irritating.

I really do hate the outsourcing trend. In a lot of cases they don't really do the job better, just cheaper. I was reading that a day's wage can be as little as two American dollars. Can you imagine? Two dollars.

Sprint PCS does that ... to India. It was horrible trying to get customer service for my phone. I'd actually have to ask to speak to someone who spoke English.

Send them a letter.. a real letter.. saying there tech support sucks because you can't understand and you'll take your business elsewhere if you have to keep dealing with it. It may do nothing... it may get you a discount or freebies... But a real letter let's them know you're serious.

That is a really good idea! Real letters do command more attention. We should all do that.

I hate writing letters but if I wait till I'm angry enough next time, that would be enough to motivate me to follow through.

I agree wholeheartedly. Nextel's 411 is now with Sprint in some far off place. I realize that it is a global market, but when I have to say B.E.L.L.E.V.I.L.L.E three times just to have them say there is nothing in Bellevue...and then finally be transferred to a court house fax line....grr. Used to be able to press * if they gave a wrong number, but now you have to call back.

I now exclusively use 1-800-FREE-411. You should too. The only charge you incur is the airtime.

Actually Onyx you bring up a very good point.

Once I called tech support and the guy asked ME for help on a LInux issue.

I've met smarter pet rocks than most tech support.
