Kensington-- a non-denominational church

I go to a church in Troy called Kensington. I like it because it dares to go where I haven't seen other churches go. It shows in their topics, dramas, and in the music they play. Ever heard a Led Zepplin song play in church?? To me it's a non-traditional place, and I love it. That's where God really shows through. For information on the services and times, directions, etc, go to: http://kensingtonchurch.org/index2.php

These guys not only speak to believers, but to skeptics, and atheists as well. Give it a shot. Come as you are.

I went... I liked a few things about it. But it felt very "commercialized" to me... and far too big to feel personally connected. Also...when I went, there was still more "God" and Christianity then I was comfortable with.

I go to the Universalist Unitarian church in Birmingham. It's about as liberal a "religion" as you'll find... I felt like I was "home" from the day I stepped into the place.

I went a few years ago. I liked it, but I felt lost, small, and insignificant so I stopped going. I still feel lost, though not so small, and wavering on the insignificant.

one thing to remember about "church"....

none of them are ever perfect.

all of them are full of, and run by, people.

and it has always been this way......look at Christ's warnings to the 7 churches in the book of revalation.

at some point - you need to llok at what you CAN glean from it, and how you can improve upon it, as the church is only as strong as the body of beleivers filling it.

we need leaders in church, people who are not afraid to invest themselves personally.

I hae never "fit in" in any church....not in any tradtional sense. And - I've often stirred things up - if and when I saw a need for pot stirring. But I also beleive that this is my calling, and wish more people answerd the call. I do not oppose standard theology or doctrine - and I admit that at times that same doctrine (which I love) challenges and or chastizes me.

I do however - fight hard against typical "Christianeze" leanings, and push for transparancy and accountability among leadership and bretheren. It is very much like a marriage......what you bring to the table is what you'll get out of it.

that said...I love the church. because it is God's hand and voice among a world of fallen and broken people.

Come to ours for a visit... we like people that question, and think.... and stir things up. :wink

I help teach 6th and 7th graders right now. They're learning (me too) about world religions. Judeaism is next. Were supposd to visit one of their churches in Oak Park next weekend. Part of what I love about being UU... always learning, always growing.

"I am the church

You are the church

We are the church together"

And that's about as perfect as you can get. :grin

Didn't that church burn down once? Last summer they had their services near me at Adams High School while repairs were being made to thier building. I think the signs at Adams said said Kensington anyway.

I just may do that sometime, it sounds like its a healthy church, and its so cool to hear when somone is grounded and still has the freedom to be themselves.

I'm sorry to hear that you feel lost. It's good that you don't feel small and insignificant anymore, though. I hope someday maybe you'll give it another shot. Message me if you're ever interested in going :)

Hmmm...I don't know. I think they have a "campus" that meets at a High School. That might be it. I go to the Main Campus, and I think the one inside a High School is the North Campus. They're also building an East and a West. They're covering all the directions you could possibly go in! Unless they decide to get technical and make like North East Campus or something. Haha, I'm being silly now.

Hmmm....Slayer....hmmm, I don't know about that one, lol. If you'd be interested in going, don't be afraid to message me. I've been to churches by myself, but it's nicer when someone else comes along. Know what, I think I've met you at City Club...but then again, there's another guy who looks almost just like you. Wouldn't it be interesting if you guys happen to be friends, hahaha. Hope none of that was offensive or anything [sweat drop].
